Plot summary

The film opens with Kata returning to Hungary after many years to visit her mother. Anna is initially shocked and apprehensive, having not seen her daughter in nearly 20 years, and the two women struggle to connect at first. The film then flashes back to the past, showing Anna as a young woman raising Kata on her own after her husband leaves her. Anna struggles to make ends meet as a single mother and is often forced to leave Kata with her mother while she works long hours at the hospital.

As the flashback ends, Anna and Kata begin to open up to each other and explore their complicated relationship. They go on walks, visit Anna's childhood home, and reminisce about their past. Through these conversations, it is revealed that Anna gave up custody of Kata when she was a child, feeling that she was not capable of providing for her daughter on her own. Kata was raised by her grandmother in Hungary and then moved to Paris to pursue her own dreams.

As they spend more time together, Anna and Kata begin to confront their past mistakes and misunderstandings. They both acknowledge that they made mistakes, but also express regret for the lost time they could have spent together. Anna also begins to question her own choices and priorities, wondering if her career was worth sacrificing her relationship with her daughter.

The climax of the film comes when Kata falls ill with appendicitis and Anna takes her to the hospital where she works. Anna successfully performs surgery on her daughter, and the two women are finally able to reconcile their past and build a new relationship based on mutual understanding and forgiveness.

The film ends with Anna and Kata walking through a park together, enjoying each other's company and the beauty of their surroundings. The film's closing shot shows the two women walking away from the camera, symbolizing their journey towards a new future together.

Overall, "The Two of Them" is a touching and intimate portrayal of a mother-daughter relationship that has been strained by distance and time. The film's exploration of complex emotions and relationships is masterfully done, and the performances by Katalin Berek and Gyöngyvér Vigh are outstanding.
