Laura Åkerlund (born 1987 in Helsinki, Finland)[1] is a Finnish opera stage director and pianist.[2] She was a finalist in 2019 for the position of Directrice Générale in the Opéra de Lyon[3][4][5] as well as a finalist in 2021 for the same position in the Opéra National de Bordeaux.[6]

Biography

Åkerlund started piano lessons at the age of six, and continued her studies privately and at the Helsinki Conservatory. She later graduated from the Helsinki University with a Master’s degree in Musicology. She also studied Opera Stage Directing at Sibelius-Academy, Theater Studies at Freie Universität Berlin, Management and International Business at Aalto University. She is multilingual (Finnish, English, Swedish, German, French).[7]

Since 2007, she has assisted several opera stage directors such as Peter Sellars, Kirill Serebrennikov, Calixto Bieito, David Bösch, Tilman Hecker, Erik Söderblom, Johanna Freundlich, Vilppu Kiljunen in Finland, Sweden, Germany, England, notably at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin, Oper Stuttgart, Bayerische Staatsoper,[8] Helsinki Festival, Baltic Sea Festival, and Grimeborn Festival for New Opera.

Her own stage directions are Himmerrä ja Valo, which was composed by Finnish composer Heta Aho,[9] at the 2011 Musica Nova Festival, the musical Aallonharjalla in 2011, Eugen Onegin in Saint Petersburg in 2015, which won the Best Directors award, Moniuszko’s opera Halka in 2018,[10] and Aulis Sallinen's opera The Red Line in Kemi.[11][12][13]

She is the founder and director of the newest opera house in Finland, Helsingin Koominen Ooppera (Comic Opera Helsinki), which was inspired by the innovative tradition of Opéra Comique Paris, as well Komische Oper in Berlin.[14][15][16][17] The aim of the opera house is to present opera for new audiences, and to do experimental productions in unusual locations. The Comic Opera Helsinki produced the first immersive opera ever to be performed in Finland with Vixen in 2017, which was a co-production between Silent Opera and Helsinki Festival that took place in an old train station.[18][19] Between 2019 and 2020, she was a member of the executive team and Head of Dramaturgy at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe in Germany.[20][21][22] She was also a Jury Member of Academy for Theatre and Digitality at the Theater Dortmund in Germany from 2020 to 2023.[23]
