Project Reality (PR) is a modification for the computer game Battlefield 2 on the PC. The mod's aim is to use the game engine, developed by Digital Illusions CE (DICE), to create a more realistic combat environment than the original BF2 gameplay provided, and place a greater emphasis on teamwork and cooperation.
Most aspects of Battlefield 2 that have the capacity to be modified (such as physical properties of weapons and vehicles) have been tweaked to reflect their real life counterparts.
Features
Forward Spawn Points
The default Battlefield 2 spawn system has been completely overhauled and reconfigured so that players will now have to rely on squad leaders, “Rally Points”, and APCs for forward spawn points on the battlefield.
Vehicle Damage System
Another major feature included in v0.5 was the new Vehicle Damage System, which was implemented on almost all vehicles available in PR. This new system affects vehicle mobility and/or operational status once they become damaged. For example, tanks can take damage from an anti-tank round, thus losing the ability to rotate the turret or being rendered immobile due to a destroyed track. This new system is not limited to just ground forces, as aircraft (including helicopters) are just as vulnerable.
Tank & Pilot Kits
Building on top of "Kit Limiting" system in the v0.4 release, PR has included a "Pilot" and "Crewman" kits that must be requested and obtained before a player can pilot an aircraft or operate a tank. Some vehicles, including light jeeps, are still operable by players without a specific kit.'
Kit Limiting
Along with Tank and Pilot kits, Anti-Air, Heavy Anti-Tank, Support, Marksmen, and Sniper kits are also limited. There are limited quantities of the above kits, varying with the amount of people on the server. To request a kit, one must be in a squad and be near a rally point, APC, supply crate or main base.
Destructible Environments
Included in this release is the first map with a fully destructible environment. All the buildings in Helmand Province can be destroyed with explosives, such as an RPG round or C-4 charges.
Advance and Secure (AAS) v2
In this game mode, each team battles over a "group" of control points (flags) at any given time. A team must capture the entire group of control points before moving on to the next designated group of control points. A "group" can contain from one to five control points.
Extraction
There are two types of extraction game mode. In one, an SUV must be escorted from a hostile location to a friendly location. The SUV may also be required to pass through checkpoints along the route. In the other mode, a pilot near a crash site must be "rescued" and evacuated to safety. To "rescue" the pilot a player must pickup the pilot kit. In both modes, the opposing team attempts to destroy the target which is being escorted.
Factions
Project Reality includes five factions.
- United States (planned to be split into Army and USMC) - main weapon: M16A2
- British Armed Forces - main weapon: L85A2
- People's Liberation Army - main weapon: QBZ-95
- Middle Eastern Coalition (fictional) - main weapon: G3
- Insurgents - main weapon: AK-47 - While lacking conventional armor and air power, insurgents have half the conventional spawn time and have access to various "unconventional" weapons, such as IEDs, Molotov cocktails and car bombs.
New Vehicles and Weapons
QBZ-95 Rifle Series (PLA)
The Chinese forces are now armed with the 5.8mm QBZ-95 rifle series. In addition to the standard BF2 QBU-88 marksman rifle, there are two new variants of the rifle: the QBZ-95 assault rifle, with a 4x scope, and the QBZ-95 iron sighted variant, which is the standard, unscoped version of the rifle. A version equipped with a grenade launcher will be seen in a future Project Reality release.
M14 Designated Marksman Rifle (US)
The US faction is now equipped with the 7.62mm M14 marksman rifle. This gas-operated rifle features high damage and accuracy.
AT4 Light Anti-Tank (US)
The US faction has also received another new weapon, the AT4 Anti-Tank system. This light but powerful unguided anti-tank rocket launcher system has been used by the US and Swedish militaries for many years.
Merlin HC3 Transport Helicopter (UK)
The latest release has included the British Merlin HC3 helicopter. This aircraft can transport up to 6 players and includes a fully functional rear loading ramp which is opened and closed by the copilot.
Land Rover (UK)
The British forces have also been given the Land Rover in the light jeep category. This vehicle is armed with two 7.62mm GPMGs and can carry up to 3 players.
