Covers
This song has been covered by a few artists since its release. One artist, Frank Chaira (http://www.myspace.com/FrankChaira), switched the song to 'I Kissed A Boy.' The other artist, Attack Attack! (http://www.myspace.com/attackattack), kept the same lyrics, but screamed the 'us girls, we are so magical...' part. Both are up-and-coming myspace celebrity artists.
KP has never kissed a girl
She is quoted in this interview as admitting she has never kissed a girl.. surely that fact is worth mentioning in this article somewhere? It is fairly significant to the meaning and purpose of the song imho Omgplz (talk) 00:10, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Oh, yes she did. Katie Couric mentioned it. She said, "You have, in fact, kissed girls". And Katy confirmed it. Then When she was interrogated if she liked it, katy said, "I don't think I would have continued if i didn't like it when i first did it" or something like that. Search "katy perry katie couric interview" on youtube. you should get it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.3.148.189 (talk) 02:34, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Controversy: lesbian kiss
wow, just... wow: "The song has gained a significant amount of controversy since its rise to popularity due to its positive treatment of a lesbian kiss.[1]"
really? do people really believe this? i don't know, i passed 12yo a while ago, but damn, i don't think i was ever that stupid. a female kissing a another female in order to get a male is certainly not lesbian. only in an extreme, strict sense it's a "lesbian" kiss, but so is a woman or girl kissing her mother; a man or boy kissing his father.
take any old white kid for instance, they can put on a "black" accent all they want, it won't make them black. in fact, the only person who can talk "black" is black, whether you view their accent as "black" or "white." why is this? well, do the words 'social construct' mean nothing to you kids?
- First, Please sign your posts on talk pages per Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages. Thanks!
- Secondly, if you had read the reference you would find that it is not true. The controversy is over the drunken and amoral nature of a (mild) sexual act committed in public. Hyacinth (talk) 23:55, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- It's not unusual to talk about "lesbian sex" or a "homosexual relationship" without regard to the sexual orientation of the participants. I don't think it's ridiculous to say "lesbian kiss" when both of the participants are female.
- And after several readings of the referenced article, I still took away that parents don't want their kids hearing about a kiss between two girls, not that they don't want their kids hearing about a kiss. The article definitely doesn't draw a conclusion about why the song is controversial, it only quotes a bunch of people on the subject. But lines like "Her friend Carly Johnson, 17, of South Orange, said she didn't think the song would encourage teens to experiment with bisexuality"--er, and so what if it did? There's an implied disapproval there. There's also nothing in the article about infidelity, and I still don't think a song can "support" something.
- Anyway, I don't mean any disrespect and I don't like controversy, so I'm going to bow out. --Galaxiaad (talk) 02:27, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- I don't think it's that far-fetched to say it's slightly controversial for that reason (though it could certainly be phrased more eloquently); one only need look at sites such as http://virtuealert.blogspot.com/2008/06/overnight-success-of-katy-perrys-single.html for evidence. There are plenty of songs that 'promote infidelity' that go unnoticed, yet as soon as a song is about bisexual experimentation, you have the papers writing about its so-called support of infidelity. Is that REALLY the matter at hand? And does it REALLY seem that sexuality has nothing to do with it when the interviewees feels compelled to specifically say that whatever 'controversy' is NOT with regard to sexuality? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.171.124.237 (talk) 07:28, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Naming conventions (identity) indicates that "same-sex" is preferable, especially in many situations, to "lesbian". Hyacinth (talk) 02:50, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
How's the section look now? Hyacinth (talk) 22:23, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Structure
Why is the track listing now in the middle of the article? Why does the music video section now divide the criticism and controversy sections? I'd put the track listing at the end and the music video info before the reception. Hyacinth (talk) 03:02, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
UMM JUST A LITTLE TIP THE SONG HAS SOLD MORE THAN 2 MILLION IN THE US. KATY HAS CONFERMED THIS IN AN INTERVIEW WITH HOWARD STERN. SO CAN WE CHANGE IT TO 2 MILLION+. AND CHANGE IT 2 DOUBLE PLATNUM —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.95.234.164 (talk) 21:23, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
released
The article says the song wont be released in the UK until September, but it is listed as already being released. What do you think? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zobango (talk • contribs) 22:11, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Why people still puting september 1st UK. It clearly been released. Charted at no.4 It #1 on UK itunes right now. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.3.202.236 (talk) 17:32, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
Miley Cyrus controversy
First of all, this lacks citations - is there proof a controversy even arose? Second, whether or not Cyrus is a minor is largely irrelevant. It's not as if Katy Perry said she was going to have sex with Cyrus - then her age would be an issue. But as far as I know, it's OK for an adult to kiss a minor. TheKillerAngel (talk) 01:21, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
- She kissed Cyrus!? 70.24.86.49 (talk) 19:12, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- Nope. No one said Perry did. Apparently she mentioned the possibility in an interview. Cyrus, however, and of course, said she wouldn't [1]. Hyacinth (talk) 22:10, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Perry is too old for Cyrus, breaking Miley's mother's under-eighteen only rule [2]. Hyacinth (talk) 01:42, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Sobule
Does this have anything at all to do with the Jill Sobule novelty hit from 1995? Sobule's song was released as a single, and was a minor popular success; this article should really be at something like e.g. "I Kissed a Girl (Katy Perry song)" (indeed, it looks as if someone has redirected it from there). -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 00:24, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- The JS song does not have its own article*. There is a disambiguation hatnote at the top of the article that will direct people looking for that song to the proper article. -- The Red Pen of Doom 02:54, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- .*currently. If you can find reliable sources to start one, feel free! (At which point, the contents of this article will need to be moved to a new page name, and this will become a disambig page on its own.)
Why would this page move? Hyacinth (talk) 20:27, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
I think it's amazing that this song gets its own article, whereas the older song of the same name by Jill Sobule doesn't have an article at all. I think for its time, the Sobule song was more controversial. Oh, and Fabio was in the music video for that one. 98.221.133.96 (talk) 08:09, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Be bold and start that article. Hyacinth (talk) 10:42, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- In general, is it wise for an anon to create an article? I use Wikipedia a lot and I'm farmiliar with most protocol, and perhaps I will create an account one day. Still, while the original idea behind Wikipedia was that anyone could edit and create articles, there seems to be a sense of elitism among the deep-rooted account holders, who seem to hold anons in contempt. Yet, such contempt seems a bit un-Wikipedian in my opinion. So, should an anon be bold, or am I asking for trouble from the self-proclaimed, self-appointed protectorates of Wikipedia? 98.221.133.96 (talk) 01:27, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- My first thought would be that if you are unwilling to read guidelines such as Wikipedia:Be bold you should probably avoid being bold.
- However, far more importantly I would caution you to keep in mind the distinction between between "trouble" and people whining.
- Of course, Wikipedia:Be bold does not specifically address your concern as an anonymous editor, but it does caution, "Be bold! ...but be careful." You'll have to read the guideline to see what that means before I explain further.
- Lastly, when an editor is harsh, rude, uncivil, and attempts to chastise you without informing you of policy, that editor may actually be in more potential trouble than you, since Wikipedia has clear policies or guidelines requiring civility, disallowing personal attacks and comments, and requiring one to not bite newcomers. If you are still concerned, consult the relevant manual of style for the article you wish to edit (in this case Wikipedia:Manual of Style (music)). Hyacinth (talk) 02:13, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned references in I Kissed a Girl
I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of I Kissed a Girl's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Her MTV EMA win
In the Awards and Nominations section, the asterisk next to the win for Best New Act remarks that Katy Perry was the host of the show. To me, that implies that Katy merely won because she was the host. Anybody else agrees with me or am I being overly suspicious? --Whip it! Now whip it good! 02:04, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

How Do I Work This In?
There are some facts I've noticed about Katy Perry's performances of this song, most notably the live ones.
1. She playfully opens her mouth after the final "I kissed a girl and I liked it" during the first and second chorus and the "I liked it" to mimic the shock by people over hearing the lyrics. Almost a playful parody of the "Aw, you naughty girl you" surprise face. But she rarely does on the third one, because that would be greatly risking a stream of drool pouring out of her mouth, embarrassing herself and making a situation ripe for tabloids, because unlike Tori Amos, she is too well-known to avoid that kind of negative attention. Nonetheless.....
2. During her performance of this song, and some other songs, but most extensively in this song, Katy Perry typically does not swallow her saliva. This may be a strange thing to notice, but how could I not? I noticed that her speech becomes incresingly slurred during live performances of this song (which, I believe, is why many critics feel that she can't sing live without knowing it, I think she sounds beautiful live, but her pronunciation becomes increasingly "imperfect" as the song wears on), plus her head seemed to be tilted up towards the end in all cases, and I took notice of this as a result. It's not just because of the play-gasp, as there are many other opportunities to swallow her saliva, but she leaves her mouth ajar during those times. I know this is a weird topic, but if Tori Amos fans can talk about her drooling, why can't Katy Perry fans talk about her almost drooling? This isn't to make fun of her, by the way, this is actually just an observation, and I actually gain more respect for her for doing this, it shows she gets so into this song that she just wants to sing it without interrupting it. Plus, it allowed her to take bigger breaths for longer, unbroken song phrases. Which leads to the third one.
3. Her gestures, hand motions, playful gasps, winks, and everything make her performances memorable like a Broadway show, telling a story with more than just the lyrics and adding an air of believability to it. I don't know her personally, but I can say for certain, that by the level of how much she gets into the performances of this song, I think it's her favorite song. Don't get me wrong, I know she loves her other songs like "Ur so gay", "Mannequin", and "Hot and cold", but it seems like this is her favorite song.
Personal opinion, but I think the claims of her being homophobic are ridiculous, her parents are quite possibly, but her? Certainly not. I know that some of this can't go into the article because it's my opinion, but I think 1, 2, and parts of 3 of my points could have their material worked into it. I don't know if celebrities read their own Wikipedia articles, but if so, I hope this revlation of noticing these things doesn't embarrass her, because I'm actually praising her for these things. Some of the greatest singers of all time paid little mind to their saliva pooling up as they sang: Paul Robeson, that guy that sang The Impossible Dream on Ed Sullivan, Tori Amos, Natasha Beddingfield (sometimes, at least during live performances of "Unwritten"), Lena Horne, etc. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.162.63.206 (talk) 05:43, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

- It's clearly NOT a 2DAB, since there are more than 2 entries on the disambiguation page. 2DAB does not apply. - Regardless of the number of entries on the dab page, you must agree that Katy Perry's song has received more attention, both by our readers, as seen in the number of pageviews here, as well as treatment in reliable sources, as shown in the searches below. - Oppose per Snuggums. Here's last month article traffic:
- So that's 80% for this article. Even assuming a few of those readers were looking for the other articles (and note, the disambiguation page only got 154 views), that's a massive majority interested in this article. For long-term significance, compare Google Books searches for Glee, the film, and the Jill Sobule song (many of which discuss it in reference to the Katy Perry song) with the Katy Perry song.
With TWODABS, the Sobule fans can get to that article with one click, just as they could from a dab page.Dohn joe (talk) 14:12, 2 April 2015 (UTC)- Striking the TWODABS argument, as there are four articles on the dab page. This remains however, the clear WP:PRIMARYTOPIC by usage and significance. Dohn joe (talk) 14:42, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- How much thinking went into opposing this RM on the basis of WP:TWODABS when WP:FOURDABS would have the case? Yes the Katy Perry song is more popular. So what? WP:Naming conventions (music) requires the artist be given for multiple song articles. In ictu oculi (talk) 14:54, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- "Yes the Perry song is more popular." Glad you agree. And yes, it is more covered in Google Books. SO, it is the primarytopic. - WP:PTOPIC still applies, and more instances of "I Kissed a Girl" pertain to this song than the other three entries COMBINED. Snuggums (talk / edits) 15:01, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- Striking the TWODABS argument, as there are four articles on the dab page. This remains however, the clear WP:PRIMARYTOPIC by usage and significance. Dohn joe (talk) 14:42, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose per Dohn joe and Snuggums. As always, existence of other articles with the same title doesn't stop this from being the primary topic. Calidum ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 23:20, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- Strong oppose per Paris. Red Slash 23:56, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
- Again, the problem with Paris is that is a city, not a pop song which has different familiarity to different age groups and music tastes. In ictu oculi (talk) 06:20, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose. Googling yields Katy Perry, Katy Perry, and more Katy Perry: "I Kissed a Girl" -wikipedia. The eigenvector (talk) 06:35, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose. I usually don't believe in primary topics, but this one seems rather clear. Steel1943 (talk) 01:02, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Genre
Per WP:RS ("Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable, published sources, making sure that all majority and significant minority views that have appeared in those sources are covered"), WP:OR ("Wikipedia articles must not contain original research."), and WP:SUBJECTIVE ("articles should provide an overview of the common interpretations of a creative work, preferably with citations to notable individuals holding that interpretation. Verifiable public and scholarly critiques provide useful context for works of art."), you need genres sourced. It doesn't matter what other articles say about genre as bands change styles and you need to find appropriate ones per album. It also doesn't matter if other articles don't use citations, they will need them eventually. We don't use wikipedia as a source from other pages. If you can find sources, please add them. If not, refrain from adding uncited material about genre to articles. 123.136.111.78 (talk) 23:58, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Kitty Purty?!
Under Composition, it says "Kitty Purty" assisted in the engineering. Um, does anyone know if this is a total mistake, someone being silly about Katy Perry assisting in the engineering, or if this is supposed to be a fun reference to the fact that Katy's cat, Kitty Purry, was walking around the engineering room/booth/whatever?
Whatever it is, it's misspelled; it should be either Katy Perry or Kitty Purry (R.I.P. fluffster), depending, so if someone who knows better could tackle that...? Kailey elise (talk) 13:07, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
- That section exists since 2012. I don't have the album's liner notes to determine if it is real or not. (CC) Tbhotch™ 18:18, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
Is there lyrics?
I took a look at this article, but I did not find the lyrics. Could I add the lyrics if nobody refuses. And where should I add it, in the bottom of this article? V Cat (talk) 15:19, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
- The page does discuss what this song is lyrically about, but if you're asking to post every word of it verbatim, then that would violate WP:NOTLYRICS. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 16:25, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
