Cable News Network Indonesia (known as CNN Indonesia and abbreviated as CNN ID) is a 24-hour Indonesian free-to-air television news channel owned by Trans Media in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery under CNN license.^[1] Broadcasting from Trans Media studios in South Jakarta, the local franchise presents national and international content, focusing on general news, business, sports and technology.

Programs are aired 24 hours daily via digital terrestrial TV networks, pay TV providers Transvision and IndiHome nationwide; and live streaming services for overseas viewers.

History

In 2007, Trans Media initally planned their own news-oriented web TV network named Detik TV, named after the online news portal detik.com (which was acquired by Trans Media in 2011). It initially planned to broadcast entertainment and news programs, where some of the news content would be taken from Trans TV's Reportase and Trans7's Redaksi news programs.^[2] Sometime later, Detik TV was planned to be a digital free-to-air terrestrial news TV network.^[3] In 2009, businessman Chairul Tanjung announced the birth of a strategic partnership between the then CNN brand owner Turner Broadcasting System unit of Time Warner (both Turner and Warner are part of what is now Warner Bros. Discovery) and Trans Media to launch a CNN-branded channel in Indonesia.^[4] Therefore, the Detik TV idea was eventually abandoned.^[5]

CNN Indonesia began as an online portal, CNNIndonesia.com, on 20 October 2014 with Yusuf Arifin as editor in chief. It made its soft launching as a news channel in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of the country's Proclamation of Independence on 17 August 2015; official launch of the local franchise was held in conjunction with Trans Media's 14th anniversary on 15 December 2015. CNN Indonesia are exclusive on TransVision until TVRI DKI Jakarta trying to Limited Free-to-air trial and then moved to 40 UHF TransMedia Jakarta multiplexer.

Programmes

As of 2023, the majority of CNN Indonesia's programming is locally produced. Some of the channel's news programmes are simulcast either through Trans Media's free-to-air networks Trans TV (succeding its former main news programme Reportase in 2016) and Trans7, most notably Redaksi which previously aired on Trans7 themselves and now it was moved and productions of the program which was redirected to CNN Indonesia since 4 January 2021.

Redaksi is the main news program of Trans7, which first aired just two days after the networks's rebranding on 17 December 2006. Before its production was redirected to CNN Indonesia, it originally consist of Redaksi Pagi, Redaksi Siang, Redaksi Sore, Redaksi Malam, and Redaksi Utama (as the network's breaking news). In 2018,^{[clarification needed]} Redaksi was divided into two versions; where the production of the daylight edition Redaksi Siang was handovered by CNN Indonesia (rebranded as Redaksi CNN Indonesia Siang), while the rest still self-produced by Trans7, although all of news contents on these programs are supplied by CNN Indonesia. In 2020, the CNN Indonesia-produced Redaksi Siang and Trans7-produced Redaksi Malam were exchanged, so Redaksi Siang was produced by Trans7 again, and Redaksi Malam was rebranded as Redaksi CNN Indonesia Malam.^{[citation needed]}

After CNN Indonesia's takeover of Redaksi, the program Redaksi Sore was simplified to Redaksi, as its schedule was moved into the transition between daylight and afternoon, and Redaksi Siang was later ceased broadcasting.
