On 18 February 2024, Sidharthan, a 20-year-old veterinary science student[1][2] of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, was found dead in his hostel in Pookode, Wayanad, Kerala under suspicious circumstances.[3][4]
Death
Sidharthan was Ragging and murdered by a gang involving the activists of the SFI Kerala.[5] He was just 20 years old at the time of his killing According to the police reports, Sidharthan had been ragged by over a dozen SFI member at the hostel on 2024 February 16, two days before death[6] On Valentine's Day led to the brutal assault on Sidharth by seniors. He was allegedly paraded naked and assaulted brutally in front of other students. He was also subjected to a mob trial. The brutalities took place in the courtyard of the hostel were there are over hundred residents. But no one could intervene.
Arrests
The report submitted by the Kerala Police at the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Kalpetta, also detailed the hours-long torture using belts and cable wires and the mob trial that Sidharthan underwent at the hands of the accused on 16 February 2024, two days before he was found hanging in the hostel bathroom.[citation needed]
Reactions
His suicide sparked protests and outrage from across Kerala, India and gained widespread media attention as an alleged case of Ragging Murder mob led by SFI Kerala in Kerala
Kerala governor Arif Mohammed Khan issued an order suspending the Vice-Chancellor of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) over Sidharthan's death on 2024 February 18.[7]
Kerala General Education minister V Sivankutty said that the government will take strict action against those behind the death of Sidharthan[8]
Indian National Congress’s V D Satheesan, the Leader of Opposition, who visited the family, alleged, and he said Sidharthan was murdered after brutal torture. He faced inexplicable and unbelievable cruelty from Students' Federation of India|SFI Kerala]goons at the university. The university and police tried to cover up the role of the SFI. If police do not arrest all the accused, UDF (United Democratic Front) would launch a strong agitation[9]
