Exhuma (Korean: 파묘) is a 2024 South Korean supernatural horror film written and directed by Jang Jae-hyun and starring Choi Min-sik, Kim Go-eun, Yoo Hae-jin and Lee Do-hyun. The film includes mystery and occult elements, and follows the process of excavating an ominous grave, which unleashes dreadful consequences buried underneath.[3]
It was selected in the Forum section at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere on February 16, 2024.[4] It was released on February 22, 2024.[5] The film earned US$16.8 million in its opening weekend and became the highest-grossing Korean film of 2024, as of February 29, 2024.[6]
Plot
Renowned Korean shaman and her protégé, Hwa-rim (Kim Go-eun) and Bong-gil (Lee Do-hyun) are enlisted by a wealthy Korean American family's aide to identify the mysterious illness of the family's newborn son. Hwa-rim uncovers the curse to be a 'Grave's Call', a vengeful ancestor's spirit haunting the eldest-son of the family. The family's patriarch, Park Ji-Yong, entrust the two shamans to relocate the grave to appease the ancestor, but alert them to keep quiet on the whole ordeal. Hwa-rim enlist past colleagues, a feng-shui expert Kim Sang-deok (Choi Min-sik) and a mortician Yeong-geun (Yoo Hae-jin).
Back in South Korea, Sang-deok is a Feng shui master specializing in selling burial locations for the wealthy, while Yeong-geun owns a funeral home and frequently collaborates with Sang-deok. During their first encounter with Ji-yong, Sang-deok becomes wary and suggests surveying the grave before deciding whether to cremate or relocate the grave, which Ji-yong insists on cremating. The group heads to the grave located in a remote mountain near the North Korean border. Sang-deok was left surprised by the ominous location and state of the grave, quickly backing out as he sensed a sinister energy. However, Hwa-rim insists on proceeding with the plan and persuade that she can perform rituals while the grave is being dug to avoid the curse. Ji-yong tells Sang-deok about a famous monk named 'Gisune' who provided the grave location for his grandfather and pleads for Sang-deok's help for his newborn son.
Hwa-rim and Bong-gil perform the ritual, and the excavation proceeds smoothly. After the excavation, one of the grave diggers severs the head of a human-headed snake, which triggers a bad omen. The region begins to rain and Yeong-geun insists on cremating the coffin once the rain stops. They store the coffin at a nearby ward. The local custodian, tempted by the luxurious coffin, opens it and releases the vengeful entity inside, Ji-yong's grandfather. The entity targets his family bloodline one by one, killing Ji-yong's father, mother, and Ji-yong himself. In the process, the grandfather is revealed to be a Japanese loyalist during the Korean occupation era. Before the grandfather can reach the newborn baby, Sang-deok obtains permission from Ji-yong's aunt to cremate the coffin, abolishing the curse once and for all.
Months later, Yeong-geun informs Sang-deuk about a disturbed grave digger who killed a snake. Sang-deuk visits him and is asked to find the snake. Sang-deok revisits the cursed grave site and discovers the head of an 'onna' along with a double burial site for a seven-footed standing coffin. He enlists Hwa-rim, Bong-gil, and Yeong-geun to dispose of the coffin, which Hwa-rim senses is very dangerous. The four excavate the coffin and rest at a nearby temple. During their stay, Hwa-rim learns from her senior about Gisune Monk, who is Japanese. While sleeping, Bong-gil is awakened by a night terror and witnesses a seven-foot figure obliterating a human and some pigs. He alerts Hwa-rim, which found the coffin ripped from the inside and the shed's rooftop broken. The creature confronts Hwa-rim, who communicates with it in Japanese before finding out she's human and start chasing her. Bong-gil distract the creature but gets hurt and possessed, while Hwa-rim, Sang-deuk, and Yeong-geun watch the creature turn into a ball of fire and fly back to the mountain. The four are taken to a hospital as Bong-gil recovers after surgery.
In the hospital, Hwa-rim and her senior investigate the creature's origin through the possessed Bong-gil. Sang-deok returns to the grave during daylight and finds the creature dormant on the coordinates written on the tombstone. He also discovers that the local story about the grave's robbers were Korean Patriots attempting to unearth a metal pole as part of Japanese military conquest in Korea. With more knowledge about the event and the creature, Sang-deok, Hwa-rim, and Yeong-geun devise to unearth the pole when the creature rises after midnight. Hwa-rim will distract the shogun while the others dig the site. As they cannot find the pole in the coordinates, Yeong-geun tries to flee but returns with Hwa-rim to assist Sang-deok. A vision reveals Monk Kitsune embedding a katana inside a decapitated samurai's body, turning the samurai into a ghoul, with Ji-yong's grandfather's grave serving as a cover for the relic. Sang-deok realizes the pole is a sword embedded in the creature's body. Using the Korean Patriots' wooden tool and blood, Sang-deok slays the creature based on his elemental knowledge. Sang-deok is heavily wounded but regains consciousness with the others standing by his bedside. The four are photographed attending Sang-deok's daughter's wedding.

In his own words, "I tried to actually film the background and objects, avoiding CG whenever possible. We took the photos as painstakingly as possible without building a set, and for things like ghost photos, the actual actors wore makeup for 6 hours and then took blurry photos on purpose."[17]

Critical response
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 80% and an average rating of 6.9/10, based on 15 reviews.[37] Lee Yoon-seo writing for The Korea Herald praised the performance of the cast writing, "The veteran cast puts in a strong performance to add to the immersive experience." Lee stated, "Exhuma consists of Jang's careful efforts to deliver super-realistic, detailed scenes depicting Korean shamanism - such as the traditional process of exhumation and "gut" rituals held to appease wandering spirits." Lee felt that these "are so realistically portrayed, that the film achieves a new level of horror." Concluding Lee opined, "However, despite the fine acting and attention to detail, Exhuma stumbles in unfolding its plot."[38]
Critics of Cine21 gave the movie generally favorable reviews. Lee Yong-cheol rated the movie 4 out of 5 stars, writing that it is a well-made genre movie with great meaning.[39]
