Grey Griffins is a children's novel series written by the American authors Derek Benz and J. S. Lewis in collaboration.[1]
The first trilogy in the series was published by Orchard Books, an imprint of Scholastic Inc. The authors signed with Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for the second trilogy.
Plot
The Grey Griffins series follows the story of four close friends (Max, Ernie, Natalia and Harley) who find the small town they have lived in all their lives is ground zero for an invasion of the darkest and most dangerous sort of magic.
In The Revenge of the Shadow King, the story focuses on the friendship between the four 'Griffins', as they stumble upon one dark secret after another. Death and treachery lurk in every shadow. With the help of the Knights Templar (a shadowy organization that secretly protects humanity), the Griffins must defeat the monstrous agents of the Shadow King.
In The Rise of the Black Wolf Max and his friends set off on a round-the-world journey to locate the Spear of Ragnarok before their enemies use it to enslave the world.
In The Fall of the Templar, the Black Wolf Army has launched their attack on the Templar forces while the Griffins navigate the horrors of the Underworld in search of the one secret that will stop their enemies once and for all.

Reception and criticism
The Children's Literature Review states that The Revenge of the Shadow King is "imaginative" and that "the story's fast-paced, adventure plot is compelling" but that it "lacks depth, as it fails to connect with the larger question asked by great fantasy literature".[5] The review concludes, "Overall the book is a good read, even if it is not great literature."[5]
