Prince Charles of Luxembourg (Charles Jean Philippe Joseph Marie Guillaume; born 10 May 2020) is the elder child and son of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie. He was born at Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg City. He is second in the line of succession to the throne of Luxembourg, behind his father.[2] His birth was celebrated by a 21-gun salute at Fort Thungen in Kirchberg.[3][2]

On 19 September 2020, Prince Charles was baptised at the Abbey of St. Maurice and St. Maurus of Clervaux in Luxembourg. His godparents are his maternal aunt Countess Gaëlle de Lannoy and his paternal uncle Prince Louis of Luxembourg.[4]

Early life

Before Charles' birth, Princess Stephanie announced her pregnancy on 6 December.[5] Prince Charles was born on 10 May 2020 in Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg, at 5:13 CET,[6] during the reign of his paternal grandfather Grand Duke Henri. Following his birth, Grand Duke Henri and the Grand Duchess Maria Teresa first met Charles via video chat due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[7] Charles was later baptised at the Abbey of St. Maurice and St. Maurus of Clervaux on 19 September 2020.[8] Following his first birthday on 10 May 2021, the Luxembourg Post released a set of postage stamps commemorating Charles' first twelve months of life.[9] He joined his parents for the birth of his younger brother, Prince François, on 27 March 2023.[10]
