The 2023–24 EFL League One (referred to as the Sky Bet League One for sponsorship purposes) is the 20th season of the EFL League One under its current title and the 32nd season under its current league division format. The season began on 5 August 2023.
On 19 May 2023, Wigan Athletic were deducted four points for salary breaches, with another four-point deduction suspended. On 26 May 2023, a further four-point deduction was imposed.
On 16 August 2023, Reading were deducted one point for failing to pay players on time and in full on three occasions in the 2022–23 season. On 13 September, a further three points were deducted, for failing to deposit player wages on time. On 27 February 2024, a further two points were deducted due to late HMRC payments.
On 3 October 2023, the game between Leyton Orient and Lincoln City was halted in the 82nd minute, due to a supporter in the stands requiring medical attention. After a lengthy delay of almost 1 hour, the referee eventually took the players from the field, and the match was abandoned. It was later confirmed that, despite best efforts from paramedics, they could not revive him, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The supporter was later identified as Derek Reynolds, aged 74, who was a life long supporter of Leyton Orient.[2][3] The game would be replayed on 21 November, where Leyton Orient lost 1–0 to Lincoln City. A minute's silence was held in memory of Reynolds, prior to the game.[4]
On 13 January 2024, the game between Bolton Wanderers and Cheltenham Town was halted after 29 minutes, due to a medical emergency in the crowd. The referee initially took the players off the pitch, so that medical personnel could attend to the supporter. 30 minutes later, the game was officially abandoned, with Bolton later confirming that the supporter had suffered a cardiac arrest, and was taken to hospital.[5] On 14 January, a statement from both clubs confirmed that despite best efforts, the supporter (who was confirmed as 71-year-old Iain Purslow, a lifelong supporter of Wanderers) had died.[6][7]
Also on 13 January, the game between Reading and Port Vale was stopped in the 3rd minute, as Reading fans threw tennis balls onto the pitch. The match was stopped again after 16 minutes, as Reading fans invaded the pitch, in protest of club owner Dai Yongge. The referee took both sets of players off the pitch, but despite announcements for the fans to leave the pitch, they refused, and the referee had no option but to abandon the game.[8]
