Question from Ultradiamiondchicken (22:51, 22 March 2024)
Hello how are you? I've been struggling on how to create a article so can you please explain how to make a article. FYI:I am on Ipad --Ultradiamiondchicken (talk) 22:51, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Ultradiamiondchicken What are you trying to write an article about? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 02:17, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- @CaptainEek about a type of chicken Ultradiamiondchicken (talk) 15:41, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Ultradiamiondchicken Well if it's the thing you've written on your user page, that doesn't sound like a real thing. Wikipedia only covers topics which have received significant coverage in reliable sources, thus establishing their notability. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 23:52, 25 March 2024 (UTC)

Questions, request for help and advice
Greetings, CaptainEek. First of all, my apologies for bothering you but I seem to have found myself in a situation where I need some advice, and possibly some help.
Recently, after the Portuguese elections, I noticed that some of the Portuguese parties here on Wikipedia had their political "position" either incorrect or unnecessarily vague (from x to y, for example). Since it was a small quick fix, I edited the aforementioned information and left at that. Full disclosure, I'm aware I should've sourced the information, but what was there before was also unsourced. I admit my fault on that point, in fact, I reverted the edit myself on this page:
For further context, I've been registered on Wikipedia since August of 2010 and never had a fight with anyone. There were some content disputes, but it was all resolved in Talk pages prior to any action being used or needed, and that's always my expectation when I make a new edit.
However, out of the blue, a user called Vif12vf (and, apparently, from Norway) reverted my edit without any attempt to talk to me before, and the proceeded to go to my Talk page to accuse me of Disruption, and warn me of potential banning.
I took this personally, as I didn't act in bad faith, but was treated as I did.
In fact, all throughout Wikipedia there are warnings of "assuming good faith" before starting a fight, but this user didn't seem to care.
My second mistake here was that I reverted the reversion (essentially starting the revert war), and typed some comments that, in hindsight, I shouldn't have (implying that, because he's from Norway not Portugal, he'd have less knowledge on the topic - which may be true, but in hindsight, irrelevant), which became obvious as the user in question reverted my reversion of his reversion. In anger, I reverted it one more time.
About one hour later, I realized this wasn't going to end well, so I reverted the whole thing back to what it was before I made the original edit, and started to look at formal ways to deal with this.
I noticed that the user's reverts had a Twinkle tag, and after reading its page, it seemed to me that the user was guilty of "Abuse" as described on Twinkle page. So I dug deeper and, after confronting the user on his Talk page, I noticed that other users were also complaining of these spontaneous reverts without any type of prior communication.
Since then, I tried to ask for advice on the Administrators' noticeboard, but someone called Nate decided to change my request for information/advice into a full-fledged report.
Unfortunately, this whole situation is tiring, and I just want it to be over. So here is where I need your help understanding how to move on from this:
1 - my comments, which I regret, are still visible in the View History page. Is this a case where Oversight can be used to remove what I said (as it can be perceived as an attack on the other user)?
2 - is Vif12vf use of Twinkle in the way he's doing (or his reverts in general) acceptable or is it abuse?
3 - finally, what would you advise me to do at this point?
Sorry for the length of this question/request. Thank you in advance for your input. Raven-14 (talk) 05:51, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Raven-14
- Your comments are quite mild, so do not qualify for oversight, nor would they qualify for revision deletion. I think your admission here that you regret them, along with an understanding that you will move past them, should be sufficient. Don't worry, I have some gaffes of mine still out there too, you live and you learn :)
- His reversion of you on Portuguese labor party was appropriate. You changed the party's affiliation without providing a reliable source to back up the change. Twinkle is a semi-automated tool which helps with making certain edits faster. The Twinkle warning that you got on your page was boilerplate; while I would advise User:Vif12vf to be careful about dispensing the nastily worded boiler plate and consider giving customized feedback wherever possible, he was within his rights to give you that warning. I'm sorry this got so far without someone just sitting down and explaining this to you in layman's terms.
- I'd treat this a learning experience. Every editor has some bumps along the way. I did plenty of dumb things before I got elected to adminship; its part of the process. If you want to make changes to pages like say changing what a party's politics are, you'll need to familiarize yourself with using reliable sources, and making and using citations appropriately. I.e., to say that the Portuguese labor party is left-wing, you'll need a reliable source which says as much. If you have questions on how to go about that, let me know and I can give more guidance.
- CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 06:18, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hello again.
- First of all, thank you for the reply, and for the calm, non-aggressive, way you responded - was refreshing, especially after the way most users talked to me recently.
- I understand your response and I agree, the only thing left to do is just move on.
- I appreciate your offer of helping me out become a better Wikipedia editor but, after some thought, I realize it's best if I just quit altogether. If you check my profile you'll se that, even though I'm registered since 2010, I only got my "100 edits" badge in 2024 - that means I was never a regular editor to begin with.
- So my remaining question is, can you help me with a courtesy vanish?
- And do I have to logout first for it to take effect? I'm asking because I don't want to accidentally log back in after it's done.
- Thank you. Raven-14 (talk) 00:58, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Raven-14 I think vanishing would be extreme and not warranted by the circumstances. I know it's not fun to have this kind of stuff happen, but you didn't get banned or pick up any sanctions, so that's a win in my book (along the lines of "any landing you can walk away from is a good landing"). And remember, if you edit after vanishing, people could still be able to link you to your previous account, since the process isn't foolproof. You seem like a valuable and interesting fellow, and I hope you stick around and keep editing. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 01:21, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- I appreciate your kind words but, as I said, I thought about it and I'm sure of it.
- In fact, if I did get a ban or sanction (as you say), then I wouldn't be able to ask for a courtesy vanish, would I? It's best to take the opportunity while the account is in good standing.
- To further your analogy, I walked away from this landing, yes, but that doesn't mean I want to ever get inside a plane again.
- I understand it's not foolproof as a complete account deletion doesn't seem to be possible, but from what I've been reading around, a courtesy vanish is the closest a member can be of being gone for good - and it's only a risk if I tried to return, which I'm 100% certain I won't.
- As I said, in fourteen years, I only made around one hundred edits... there's zero risk of me coming back. Not on this account, or any other.
- I take it from your words that being logged in isn't the problem, it's just if I do any edits (replying in your Talk page counts, I believe). So it's fine, I'll wait for your confirmation of it being done, and log out afterwards.
- Please.
- And thank you. Raven-14 (talk) 02:12, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Raven-14 I don't feel comfortable vanishing you. You can try asking someone else. I'm sorry to see you go. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 02:21, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – April 2024
News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2024).
- An RfC is open to convert all current and future community discretionary sanctions to (community designated) contentious topics procedure.
- The Toolforge Grid Engine services have been shut down after the final migration process from Grid Engine to Kubernetes. (T313405)
- An arbitration case has been opened to look into "the intersection of managing conflict of interest editing with the harassment (outing) policy".
- Editors are invited to sign up for The Core Contest, an initiative running from April 15 to May 31, which aims to improve vital and other core articles on Wikipedia.
Regarding your arbitrary accusation
You are telling me that I am a bad fit for the project. This is actually a very serious accusation almost pretty much like wanting me out of the project. As such, I don't thjnk it is anywhere near fair or objective or appropriate for an arbitrator to base such accusation in one diff of my dispute with an admin without even conducting an objective analysis of my overall editing history, which would show many instances where I am receptive and even seek out objective criticism. Sincerely, Thinker78 (talk) 00:58, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Thinker78 For starters, I clarified that my comments were made outside my role as an admin or arbitrator. Second, yes, a WP:BOOMERANG implies that action be taken against filers. Does that mean you should be banned? Hopefully not. Are there lesser sanctions that might help you remain a productive editor? I hope so. But your inability to take feedback is becoming an issue that is soaking up huge amounts of editor time. Third, no, I have not reviewed all ~20,000 edits you have ever made. I see that you have done much good work for the project, and that work is appreciated. But nobody is immune from sanction merely because of their past work. The community has banned people with 25 times more edits than you have. I'm not sure what you're hoping to achieve with this crusade, but you really need to listen to the chorus of people telling you that you were in the wrong. It is okay to own up to your mistakes. Wikipedia expects you to accept your mistakes, learn from them, and grow. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 01:21, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024
Hello CaptainEek,
Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.
Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.
Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.
It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!
2023 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.
Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.
Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Pages Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.

Copyediting
Hey there! I love your user page. I want to make wikipedia even better than it already is. I was wondering if the small edits I've made so far have been good (not sure if wikipedia logs what exactly what user contributed what though)
Thanks for your work here again. Megaman2003 (talk) 14:30, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Megaman2003 Generally looks good. With this edit to New Adventures I would caution that you need to cite to a reliable source when you add new information. Keep up the good work! CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 22:08, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hello again! I want to add a picture to an article, more specifically a movie poster for a movie. What exactly do I answer when uploading to wikipedia commons about this? Megaman2003 (talk) 18:24, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Megaman2003 Movie posters are a bit tricky, as they are copyrighted. For us to include a movie poster requires us to do so under WP:FAIRUSE. That means that you have to upload the smallest reasonable resolution of the poster, and it can only be used very sparingly. Do not upload such a work to Commons. Instead, upload it here on Wikipedia only, so that the file stays local, thereby minimizing its use and protecting us from copyright problems. When uploading it, you need to be honest and frank: it isn't your work. Someone else made it, and someone else owns the copyright. You are using it under fair use. Framgate
CaptainEek, your statement that We desyssoped Fram in part for harassment
is factually incorrect. Fram was desysopped by the WMF Office at the behest of Trust and Safety. Only Arbcom was given access to the (partially redacted) evidence against them, so I am not privy to the specific charges, but harassment features in the ensuing Arbcom case. Arbcom decided to vacate Fram's ban from English Wikipedia but to "[take] over the decision to remove Fram's administrator tools". There was an extensive negative response in the community to this latter decision, which despite Fram's withdrawal from their second RfA, leads me to consider your statement enough of a misstatement to request you modify it. Yngvadottir (talk) 23:11, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

Question from SamaelFineArts (21:00, 8 April 2024)
Hello! I was asked to join Wikipedia to create a page for Norwegian artist Samael. So far I have only played around in the sandbox using Banksy as a template. It is much harder to create a good article than I envisioned. Seems I am unable to upload any files/artwork yet also. Any tips on how to create a good page for the digital (visual) artist called Samael? (I know there is a band with the same name, that can cause possible problems?) Are there people who could work with me on creating this page? I have the information and pictures needed, but not the know-how on how to do it properly. --SamaelFineArts (talk) 21:00, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- @SamaelFineArts It is certainly an undertaking to create a page from scratch. A few things to know: first, you will need to make sure you appropriately disclose any conflict of interest, and whether you are being WP:PAID to edit about the subject. Don't worry, disclosing won't stop you from doing so, we just want our editors to be transparent. Next, you will need to find significant coverage of Samael in reliable sources, so as to prove their notability (i.e. suitability for having a Wikipedia page in the first place). We don't write about just anyone. As for people who could work with you, you can ask questions at the WP:TEAHOUSE, as well as the Articles for Creation Help Desk, but they will not write the article for you. Our current top scorers are as follows:
- Sammi Brie (submissions) with 642 points, mostly from 11 GAs about radio and television;
- voorts (submissions) with 530 points, mostly from two FAs (Well he would, wouldn't he? and Cora Agnes Benneson) and three GAs;
- Generalissima (submissions) with 523 points, mostly from 11 GAs about coinage and history;
- SounderBruce (submissions) with 497 points, mostly from a FA about the 2020 season of the soccer club Seattle Sounders FC and two GAs;
- Tamzin (submissions) with 410 points, mostly from a FA about the drink Capri-Sun and three GAs;
- Kusma (submissions) with 330 points, mostly from a FA about the English botanist Anna Blackburne and a GA.
Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.

- @Jesspisme The process is a bit complicated. First, go to Special:Upload. Upload your file. For licensing, choose "Logo." In the summary, explain who created it and what it is for. Explain that you are associated with the business. Then, post the link to the file on my page, and I'll swap it into the article for you. However, we work with sources from reliable sources (look at WP:RS—to know what we call reliable sources). Adding information you know is called original research (see WP:OR—for what we call original research). Such can be added only if it is supported by a verifiable/reliable source.
