Born 1873 in Constantinople, Turkey to a Thomas Charles and Harriet Ann Dickenson (nee Lambert, other marriage listed to a John Flynn). Joseph is registered in census as stepson in 1891. His father in records seems to be resident abroad on a number of occasions and is also listed as born in France, christened in Deptford in 1836. Both he and Joseph are listed as British citizens. Both parents are shown as being from Kent, Joseph’s mother was from Deptford and married Thomas in 1855. They resided in the Chatham area. His mother is stated as a widow in 1901 though Thomas most likely died around 1891. She died in 1916. In personal life Joseph married Kate in 1894 in Kent and they had five children. By 1911 they resided in Caversham, Oxfordshire. Three occupations are listed for Joseph in census, ships joiner, warehouseman and fruit dealer. He is pictured at New Brompton FC in 1894.
