It grows in the southeastern United States and Hawaii.[4] A deciduous annual, it grows in dry coastal plains growing to about 1–3 feet (0.30–0.91 m) high and having blooms in various colors.[5] The species may overlap with Sisyrinchium micranthum.[6][7]
