HyperOS (Chinese: 澎湃OS; pinyin: Pēngbài OS; lit. 'Surge OS'), officially named Xiaomi HyperOS (Chinese: 小米澎湃OS; pinyin: Xiǎomǐ pēngbài OS; lit. 'Xiaomi Surge OS'), is an operating system developed by Xiaomi unifying MIUI, Xiaomi's Vela OS, Mina OS and car-focused operating system's software architecture[1] for its smartphones, IoT devices and other Xiaomi hardware such as its automobiles. It is replacing MIUI gradually in 2024.[2]

HyperOS also introduces smoother animations, faster boot times for applications, and improved retention of apps in background memory. While it does not make major visual changes to the UI, users can expect minor tweaks and new customization options for the lock screen.[3]

With HyperOS, Xiaomi wants to make a "Human x Car x Home" smart ecosystem.[4][5] This approach is to create one single operating system that works across different devices and not just smartphones, hence the "Car" and "Home".

History

In 2017, Xiaomi was developing Xiaomi Vela OS to use with its own IoT devices. It is based on NuttX[6] and was announced in 2020.[7][8]

In 2019, Xiaomi pre-developed Xiaomi Mina OS, a microkernel security system.[1]

In 2021, following it's decision to make automobiles, Xiaomi was developing its own car-focused operating system.[1]

In 2022, Xiaomi decided to unity the aforementioned operating systems' software architecture, and HyperOS has finished it's research and development.[1]

The new operating system was announced on X and Weibo on October 17, 2023, and debuted alongside Xiaomi 14 Series on October 26, 2023 at 7 p.m. CST.[9][10]

MIUI's WeChat and Weibo's account has been changed to Xiaomi HyperOS on October 20, 2023 and October 23, 2023 respectively.[11][12]

A leaked version of HyperOS V1 for phones was analyzed, it is developed as MIUI 15.[11] The leaked version does not contain any code for HyperOS. MIUI 15 was also mentioned in Xiaomi's Redmi K60 Ultra event.[13] HyperOS V1 for phones is thought to have started converting from MIUI 15 in October 2023, with HyperOS features being added later.

New features

With its initial release, Xiaomi aims to enhance the underlying performance of the operating system while maintaining a familiar user interface similar to MIUI, ensuring a smooth transition for users. HyperOS introduces several new features as outlined on Xiaomi's website [14]:

  • Comprehensive system refactoring
  • A lightweight filesystem designed for improved efficiency
  • Enhanced OTA storage and performance optimized for lightweight devices
  • Expanded platform support and compatibility with over 20 different filesystems
  • Reduced storage footprint compared to MIUI
  • Customizable lock screens, drawing comparisons to iOS
  • A new render pipeline to support enhanced lock screen customizations
  • Improved multitasking capabilities
  • Inclusion of the MiSans font, previously available only on Chinese ROMs
  • These updates are designed to provide a more efficient and versatile user experience across Xiaomi's range of devices.
