Angela Carini (born 6 October 1998) is an Italian amateur boxer.
Career
Carini won a medal at the 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships.[2]
She competed in the women's welterweight division at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and was defeated in the round of 16 by Chen Nien-chin.[3]
2024 Summer Olympics
Carini competed in the women's 66 kg division at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.[4]
On 1 August, she faced Imane Khelif in a bout that sparked intense debate within the boxing community. During the match, Carini, after receiving a punch in the face, signaled for her headgear to be checked and eventually withdrew from the fight after 46 seconds.[4] Carini's reaction to getting punched in the face during the boxing match, spawned scrutiny and a transvestigation of Khelif, who was assigned female at birth and identifies as a woman.[5] Many conservatives used Carini's reaction to promote an anti-trans agenda.[5] There were several false claims that she is a trans person or that she is a man pretending to be a woman.[5] Carini's coach later commented on concerns regarding her safety, highlighting the controversy surrounding the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s decision to allow Khelif to compete.[6] The IOC, however, defended their decision to allow both boxers to compete, criticizing the International Boxing Association (IBA)'s actions as "sudden and arbitrary".[7] Carini later apologised to Khelif, stating: "I want to apologize to her and everyone else. I was angry because my Olympics had gone up in smoke. I don't have anything against Khelif. If I were to meet her again, I would embrace her".[8][9] The day after the fight, the IBA decided to award Carini the same amount of prize money, a sum of $50,000, typically reserved for the Olympic champion.[10][11]
Personal life
The daughter of police officers, Carini also serves as an officer in the Polizia di Stato and is an athlete in their sporting division, Fiamme Oro.[12]
