Founded by Joe Lucas, the company was best known for automotive electrical components such as alternators, windshield wiper motors, starter motors etc.

In the United States, during the 1960s, the legendary unreliability of Lucas electrics fitted to imported British cars such as Jaguars and Rovers led to the coining of the nickname - "Joe Lucas - Prince of Darkness"

After a series of mergers and take-overs, the remains of Lucas were taken over by the US company TRW.
