Valgeir Valgeirsson (born 22 September 2002) is an Icelandic professional footballer who plays as a right midfielder and right winger for Örebro SK. He is a product of the HK academy and has been capped by Iceland at youth level.
Club career
HK
A right-sided midfielder or winger, Valgeir began his career in his native Iceland in the youth system at HK.[3] His progression was such that he made his senior debut for the club at the age of 15 years, 4 months and 18 days as a substitute for Ólafur Eyjólfsson after 78 minutes of a 4–1 Deildabikar group stage defeat to Grindavík on 9 February 2018.[4][5] Valgeir went on to make two substitute appearances during HK's 2018 1. deild karla promotion season.[4] He was a regular in the first team during the 2019 and 2020 Úrvalsdeild seasons, making 41 appearances in all competitions and scoring seven goals.[6][7]
With less than a month of the 2020 season to play,[3] Valgeir moved to England to join the B team at Championship club Brentford on loan until the end of the 2020–21 season, with an option to buy.[3] He gained experience as a right wing back,[8] but did not win a call into the first team squad.[9] The club declined to take up the option to buy Valgeir and he finished his spell with 23 appearances and five goals.[10]
During a difficult 2021 season in which HK suffered relegation,[11][12] Valgeir made 24 appearances and scored one goal,[7] but impressed sufficiently to win the club's male Athlete and Footballer of the Year awards.[13] Entering the final year of his contract,[14] a move away from the club did not materialise during the 2021–22 off-season.[12][15] Following 12 appearances and three goals during the first half of the 2022 season,[7] Valgeir transferred out of the club in July 2022.[16]
Örebro SK
On 29 July 2022, Valgeir moved to Sweden to sign a multi-year contract with Superettan club Örebro SK.[16]
International career
Valgeir has been capped by Iceland at U16, U17 and U19 level.[17] He was a part of the Iceland squad at the 2019 UEFA European U17 Championship.[17] Valgeir was called into the U21 team for a 2021 UEFA European U21 Championship qualifier versus Sweden on 4 September 2020,[18] but was not included in the matchday squad.[19] In October 2021, Valgeir was long-listed for the U21 squad's 2023 European U21 Championship qualifier versus Portugal.[20] He was included in the final squad and remained an unused substitute during the 1–0 defeat.[9] Following his inclusion in an October 2021 U21 training camp,[21] Valgeir was again named in the squad for the following round of 2023 European U21 Championship qualifiers in November 2021 and he appeared in both matches.[17][22]
