Wikipedians in Melbourne have held four previous meetups. The fifth is now being planned as a breakfast meeting with Jimbo Wales in the city (at a venue to be arranged) on Friday, 27 April 2007.

Jimbo has proposed breakfast as the one real window of opportunity during his tightly scheduled stay in Melbourne.

Arrangements

Current arrangements are that it's a 7.30 am start until Jimbo has to leave for his conference. Jimbo says that it's "on Wikia".

And as for venue ... unless someone comes up with a better idea between now and then, we're currently looking at The Blue Train in Southbank.

Previous meetups

Possible participation (list for reference)

I've contacted half of the people on the list but have to stop now. Will get to the others this evening. Metamagician3000 06:29, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  5. Ninevah 00:35, 20 April 2007 (UTC) Wish I could, but that's a work day for me. I live in Hastings, work in Burwood. Can't see me getting into Melbourne somehow. Would definately like to come to future meetups though.[reply]

Is there anything else we'll need to do, apart from sorting out a venue?

I'll try to work out a venue after consulting with Jimbo on where in the city he will be for his conference. I'll also try to remember to bring a camera - I'm sure I won't be the only one. Hmmmm, what else? Would name tags be useful? I suppose it might depend on how many of us there are. Is anyone any good at making them if we decide we want them? Metamagician3000 07:46, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I prefer social awkardness and a lack of ice-breaking to name tags. :) Grumpyyoungman01 11:16, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Jimbo will be the guy with the beard. --bainer (talk) 11:45, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My experience from going to conferences is that name tags work, even though it looks silly to walk around with one. On the other hand, wearing them while having breakfast in some public place like a cafe is definitely scary. Fortunately, I'm not likely to meet any of my mates given that it's 8am ;) . By the way, an easy way to get name tags is to get a sheet of stickers and a marker, give everybody a sticker and let them write their name on it and stick it on their shirt.
We might need to think a bit about how to organize the whole thing if many people come (Adelaide is expecting ±20), but let's first arrange the timetable and the location. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 12:45, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Here's an offer - I'll bring along several colours of marker pen so you all have a choice; someone else bring along a sheet or two of stickers. :) Metamagician3000 23:16, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We have at least 3 Melbo-pedians who can't make it due to school.. I'm guessing they'll be a lot more. Is there anything we can do to get around this? — Deon555talkdesksign here! 22:45, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is apparently the only time Jimbo can do it, as he's only in town for one day (arriving late on theThursday night and leaving early on the Saturday morning). He's booked up on the Friday night and all through the Friday, so that's why he proposed breakfast. Of course, if there had been a time in the middle of the day that would also have ruled it out for many people who would have to be at work or school. So, I doubt that Jimbo is going to be able to offer us a "better" time. We'll have to persuade him to stay longer next time he visits Melbourne. Metamagician3000 22:55, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Venue

Is'nt Jimbo's Conference in ZINC in Federation Square? Maybe there is somewhere suitable across on Southbank. --Bduke 12:37, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a blog dedicated to reviewing breakfast locations in and around Melbourne: [1]. --bainer (talk) 23:51, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see that The Blue Train only gets a lukewarm review in that blog, but that's better than a bad review. Walter's Wine Bar gets a great review, but it might be a bit up-market and intimidating for what we want. The blog doesn't seem to review any places actually in Federation Square. I'm thinking The Blue Train might be a real possibility ... still wondering about places in Federation Square itself. Metamagician3000 01:11, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Blue Train?

I've made some inquiries at the Blue Train, since it's a spot at Southbank that I know well and have always liked. It'll be only a short walk to Jimbo's venue and is very easily accessible by train or tram. I expect that parking would even be quite easy at that time of day.

They don't take bookings but tell me that, assuming a group of about 15, we'll be able to have any spot in the house if we turn up at 7.30 am. They also say they have a wireless connection! But if anyone has better ideas, or wants to research some other possibilities, let's get it on the table (as it were). Metamagician3000 09:56, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can't help thinking that, if he is pressed for time, it may be better to choose somewhere actually at Fed Square. FNMF 11:21, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From the snooping around I've done, most places at Fed Square itself don't seem to open early enough. But I see that the Atrium Cafe opens at 7.30 am on Fridays, and might be an alternative. Does anyone know it or feel like checking it out? Or know any possibilities that I've missed? Metamagician3000 11:47, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Could someone provide a map or details of the location at Southbank of the Blue Train. - Cuddy Wifter 01:14, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Does this help at all? I have to admit that I often get lost, myself, finding the right level for things at Southbank ... and I live close in and go there relatively often. Metamagician3000 04:41, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There doesn't seem to be a map provided online. But using this from Google Maps, if you start from the promenade next to the river, enter through the main entrance (big two story entryway, into the glass-roofed atrium bit, which is about 3/4 of the way from Princes Bridge towards the footbridge), go up one level (level 1), then turn right (west) and go right down to the end, you can't miss it from there. --bainer (talk) 05:38, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
