Hippopotas (ヒポポタス, Hipopotasu) is one of the Template:Pokenum fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. The purpose of Hippopotas in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]

Its Japanese name, Hippopotas, is a play on hippopotamus, the animal which it is based on.

Biological characteristics

Hippopotas resembles a hippopotamus with desert camo skin, and has surprised, cartoonish eyes and a snout massively disproportionate to the rest of its body (compare with Trapinch).

Hippopotas live in dry lands where they bathe in sand to remove parasites and germs. Unlike the animal it is based upon, it is unable to withstand water at all.

The colors of the male and female versions of Hippopotas in the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl games are inverted.

In the video games

Hippopotas can learn Crunch and Earthquake. Its ability, Sand Stream, can whip up a sandstorm upon Hippopotas's entry in battle.
