India TV is a Hindi news channel based in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India. The channel was launched on 20 May 2004 by Rajat Sharma and his wife Ritu Dhawan.[1] The channel is a subsidiary of Independent News Service, which was co-founded by Sharma and Dhawan in 1997.[2] A rebranding of the channel took place in February 2022.[3] India TV's founder, Rajat Sharma is said to be very close to the ruling BJP and the late Arun Jaitley, a BJP politician.[4]The channel is known for reporting in favor of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Independent News Service (INS), the parent company which owns India TV is also backed by Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani.[5]

History

In 1997, Rajat Sharma and Ritu Dhawan set up the Independent News Service (INS), the parent company which owns India TV. He co-founded India TV with his wife in April 2004 from a studio in Film City, Noida, India TV. Its Broadcast Centre is in Sector 85, Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Prior to launching India TV, Rajat Sharma was previously the anchor of Aap Ki Adalat on Zee News and Janata Ki Adalat on Star News (now ABP News).

In 2014, India TV's former anchor Tanu Sharma filed FIR against two India TV executives alleging that she faced harassment in the workplace leading her to attempt suicide.[6][7] On 2 July 2014, Rajat Sharma and Ritu Dhiman threatened to pursue legal action against her.[8]
