Biography
Houseguest is a five-piece indie rock band from Akron, Ohio. The band was praised by San Francisco-based literary magazine McSweeney's in 2005 as "the best pop band in America."
Houseguest was formed in 2000 by Gabriel Schray and David Whited. Initially, the band was just those two writing and recording songs in Schray's basement. They put out a nine-song CD, House Fall Down, in the autumn of 2001. Copies were distributed to the duo’s friends.
The initial live lineup consisted of Schray and Whited on guitar and vocals, David Rich on drums, and Theodore Mallison on bass. Gabriel Fulvimar, late of Churchbuilder, joined on keyboards shortly after. Mallison left the band in April, 2002, and was replaced by Stephen Caynon. With this lineup, Houseguest played its first show at Thursday’s Lounge in Akron in May, 2002. Mallison rejoined the band as lead vocalist the next month. Caynon left the band due to medical reasons, and Schray took up duties on bass. Over the summer and autumn of 2002, Houseguest played a little over a dozen chaotic shows, some booked minutes before they began, including their first at Akron's legendary Lime Spider.
In 2003, the band began to decline. Houseguest played a total of three shows over the whole of that year, and by that summer was considered officially broken up by the members. One of those shows, in October of 2003, was actually a one-off “reunion.”
By early 2004, the band began writing new songs. Plans were made to record a new album that spring with old friend Patrick Carney, of the Black Keys, at his Rubber Factory studio.
Talking Time was recorded and mixed over May and June. In the autumn, Houseguest began playing extensively throughout northeast Ohio. Jamie Stillman, guitarist for renowned Kent, Ohio band the Party of Helicopters, joined on drums in September, 2004. Stillman drummed for Houseguest for a little under a year. An EP was recorded during this period, Electric Politeness.
In the autumn of 2005, Stillman left the band to pursue other professional concerns. Just returned to Akron after college and a stint as a session pianist in Nashville was the band’s old high school friend Steve Clements, an accomplished drummer who it was often lamented was not in Houseguest. He joined in September, 2005, and Houseguest had its permanent lineup.
That winter, Patrick Carney started a record label called Audio Eagle Records. In March of 2006, the band recorded High Strangeness at Carney’s Eagle’s Nest studio. That album was released regionally on Audio Eagle in September, 2006, and nationally in May, 2007.
