Mayor before election

Jacob Frey
DFL

Elected mayor

TBD

The 2025 Minneapolis mayoral election is scheduled to be held on November 4, 2025. Incumbent mayor Jacob Frey is eligible to run for re-election to a third term, and has stated that he plans to do so.[1] Minneapolis uses instant-runoff voting, also known as ranked choice voting, in its mayoral elections.

Background

Incumbent mayor Jacob Frey's previous term included the COVID-19 pandemic and the aftermath of George Floyd's murder in 2020, which sparked protests and civil unrest.[2] Frey opposed calls from the city council to defund the police and did not support the 2021 ballot measure aimed at replacing the police department with a new Department of Public Safety.[3]

Frey's administration focused on responding to state and federal mandates for court-sanctioned monitoring due to allegations of discriminatory policing practices.[4] The Minneapolis Police Department has experienced a significant reduction in its workforce, declining from nearly 900 sworn officers in 2019 to less than 600 in 2024.
