Instructions

Open and pour the stout into the vessel of choice, perhaps a stemless wine glass for a classy look. Allow to come to room temperature while you prepare the espresso.
# Open and pour the stout into the vessel of choice allowing room for the espresso (and the expansion of foam, even from an otherwise flat stout). Allow to come to room temperature while during preparation of the espresso.
# Extract a double shot of espresso, over-extraction is fine, or the strongest few ounces of coffee available.
# Pour the espresso in the stout, or drop in via shot glass.

== Notes ==
Pull your best double shot of espresso, over-extraction is fine. Rec. Flair 58 and local roasted, fresh [[Coffee bean|beans]].

Enjoy!
# Home made espresso is recommended and over-extraction is fine. Include as much [[Espresso|crema]] as possible.

Notes

While stouts are flat, it may foam up with the espresso, make sure you leave room in the vessel for this (a pint glass won't cut it here).

History

This started on a whim to pour the leftover coffee from a drip or percolated brew (often burned or very heavy) into a stout as "waste prevention" or "recycling" option. That was good for a long time until it occurred to just go with the straight dope of a double shot of espresso!

The name is a riff on sake bomb, Irish car bomb, British/Irish stout culture, and maritime lore.

Captain's Compass preparation

Captain's Compass Recipe[1]

  • 1 pint stout (dark beer is an alternative)
  • 2 shot espresso (strong coffee is an alternative)

History

This bomb shot or beer cocktail originated on a whim to pour leftover coffee from a drip or percolated brew (often burned or very heavy) into a stout as "waste prevention" or "recycling" option. The name is an homage to British/Irish stout culture and maritime/nautical lore. It is best enjoyed on a weekend morning.

After several years of anonymous consumption, it was submitted and accepted on the primary cocktail database on the internet, Kindred Cocktails.[2]

Preparation

  1. Open and pour the stout into the vessel of choice allowing room for the espresso (and the expansion of foam, even from an otherwise flat stout). Allow to come to room temperature while during preparation of the espresso.
  2. Extract a double shot of espresso, over-extraction is fine, or the strongest few ounces of coffee available.
  3. Pour the espresso in the stout, or drop in via shot glass.

Notes

  1. Founder's Breakfast Stout[3] is an ideal option, its thickness blends well with the espresso, but a standard stout like Guinness could be used.
  2. Imperial stouts with their residual sugar[4] and higher alcohol content could be an alternative.
  3. Seasonal beers like Hardywood Gingerbread Stout,[5] Center of the Universe Brewing Company El Duderino,[6] or other savory-flavored beer could be a nice complement instead of traditional stout.
  4. Home made espresso is recommended and over-extraction is fine. Include as much crema as possible.
