On September 12, 2024, four IS-KP militants on motorcycles opened fire at Shiite Muslims and Hazara people heading to greet pilgrims returning from the Arba'in pilgrimage in Karbala, Iraq, killing fifteen people and injuring six others.[2][3]

Attack

On September 12, four armed masked Islamic State militants on motorcycles ambushed Shiites and Hazaras while they were on a minibus. The militants took their smartphones and ordered the passengers to get out of the vehicle and line up, then three men proceeded to shoot and kick them while laughing with firearms while the other man took photos and videos.[4] When the attack was over, the four men fled to Ghor Province on their motorcycles.[5][6]

Victims

The fifteen victims were all Shia men including a dentist from Ghor Province. Most of the other victims were farmers. Fourteen people died at the site of the shooting, and one injured man died in hospital.[7]

Responses

The Taliban condemned the attack.[8]
