Chaparral High School in Temecula, California, is a public high school for grades 9-12. The school opened in 1998 with a class of Freshmen and Sophomores, and added Juniors the following year and Seniors after that, graduating its first class in 2000. It is Temcula's second high school after Temecula Valley. It became a California Distinguished School in 2001. Principle is Daniel Kenley who took the place of Paul Robinsion who left to become principle in his old school in Rancho Bernardo.
Student Body
Ethnically the student body is 57% White, 21% Hispanic, 5% Fillipino, 5% Black, 4% Asian, 1% Native American and 7% Other.[1] 5% of the Student body is classified by the district as English limited. It has approximately 3000 students and 130 teachers and staff members. 11% of the student body is eligible for free government lunches compared to the state average of 45%.
Athletics
Chaparral has 18 different sports that quailfy for a varsity letter. Its mascot is the Puma(Cougar), Chaparral owns 2 "Puma" suits and tryouts for the mascot happen every fall through the Cheerleading team.
Fall Sports
Chaparral saw its first visit to CIF SS playoffs in December 2006. Football is coached by Tommy Leach.[2] With an average of 30 points per game it ended with a shut out by Norco at the playoffs. The final score was 42-Norco and 0-Chaparral. Chaparral also has a Volleyball, Cross Country, Girls Tennis and a Girls Golf. The Girls Tennis team is coached by Ginger Brady.[3]

Chaparral has teams for Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Water Polo, and Wrestling in the spring season. Boys soccer is coached by Tonni Rossi[7] and Wrestling by Ric Campo.[8]

Chaparral has 3 activities that quialifty for an activities letter (along with JV and Freshman sports)
Cheerleading
Rebecca Holdstein is the head coach of the 3 Cheerleading teams at Chaparral. There are 54 girls currently participating in the Cheerleading team which acts as the pep squad throughout the year.[9]
Marching Band
The Platinum Sound was founded by Jerry Burdick-Rutz who left the school after the 2004 school year to found the Great Oak music program. He was succeeded by Robert Caster. The Platinum Sound participates in the Western Band Association Circuit as well as the United States Scholastic Band Association. They ended the season placed 1st in the Inland Valley and 15th in the state at the WBA championships. Finals.[10]
ROTC
The Chaparral ROTC is based off the United States Navy forming the NJROTC. It is headed by Mike Hodell and Paul Bishop. It has unarmed and armed drill teams. Chaparral also hosts an armed drill team compition every October it has over 30 schools participate.
Academics
Chaparral High is ranked 728 by Newsweek's annual top 1000 high schools in America, opposed to Temecula Valley's rank of 843 (Great Oak is not listed). The average dropout rate of the school is 1% while 89% graduate and 38% graduate meeting either University of California or Cal State entry requirments.[11]
