Luigi Mangione is an American man who was identified as a person of interest in the killing of Brian Thompson. Mangione was apprehended and arraigned in Altoona, Pennsylvania on December 9, 2024.[1]
Early life
Mangione was born in the US state of Maryland. In 2016, he graduated as valedictorian from the Gilman School, a prep school in the state.[1] He attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in May 2020. He received a bachelors and masters degree for Science in Engineering with a major in computer science and a minor in mathematics. He lived in Honolulu until the killing.[2]
Involvement in the killing of Brian Thompson
On December 4, 2024, CEO of health insurance company UnitedHealthcare Brian Thompson was shot and killed outside of the New York Hilton Midtown hotel in New York City. The gunman was masked and had come to New York via a bus from Atlanta.[3][4] On the bullet casings were the words "Deny", "Defend", and "Depose", which some have linked to criticism of health insurance companies not paying claims.[5] The suspect possibly left the city, being seen at a bus terminal afterward.[6] Anger erupted on social media platforms at Thompson, UnitedHealth, and the health insurance system generally, with many praising the killing.[7]
On December 9, Mangione was arrested at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, suspected by an employee of carrying out the attack.[8] He was arraigned at Blair County Courthouse on firearms charges and questioned by the New York City Police Department.[9]
