Luigi Nicholas Mangione is an American man who was identified as a person of interest in the killing of Brian Thompson. Mangione was apprehended and arraigned in Altoona, Pennsylvania on December 9, 2024.

Early life

Mangione was born in the US state of Maryland to Louis and Kathleen Mangione in 1998 and was apart of a notable family in Maryland which owned many business. Mangione's grandfather owned a golf course and they also owned a country club in Howard County. They also brought another country club in the 1980's His father died when he was eleven years old. In 2016, he graduated as valedictorian from the Gilman School, a prep school in the state which cost 37,000$ per year Mangione was also an athlete, and the people at the school said that Mangione also made mobile games before he went to college. People also considered Mangione the smartest person in the school. He was also a big believer in technology. Later he attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in May 2020. He received a bachelors and masters degree for Science in Engineering with a major in computer science and a minor in mathematics. His LinkedIn page also showed that Mangione worked as a software engineer at TrueCar. He also fixed 300 bugs for an company called Firafix Games for a video game called "Civilization VI" He lived in Honolulu until the killing.

Mangione had an Twitter (X) account, Instagram account, Reddit account and a Goodreads account On his Reddit account under the alias Mister_Cactus he frequently complained about his back injury saying that he had problems with ever since child hood which was according to a post in July 2023. He also said according to him " “I slipped on a piece of paper and my right glute locked and right leg shut down for a week.” He also said that he was scared of an operation that was scheduled two weeks later and he also talked about his travel and about gaming. He posted on his Reddit account for a 7 year span even though his account was banned shortly after his arrest because Reddit has an strict policy about high-profile crimes. He also had a Goodreads account and on his read list. He had a book about dieting and about chronic back pain. He also had the Industrial Society and Its Future a manifesto made by Ted Kaczynski. While on his Twitter (X) account he had an X-ray picture of a spine. Which was posted during 2016.

On December 4, 2024, CEO of health insurance company UnitedHealthcare Brian Thompson was shot and killed outside of the New York Hilton Midtown hotel in New York City. The gunman was masked and had come to New York via a bus from Atlanta. On the bullet casings were the words "Deny", "Defend", and "Depose", which some have linked to criticism of health insurance companies not paying claims. The suspect possibly left the city, being seen at a bus terminal afterward. Anger erupted on social media platforms at Thompson, UnitedHealth, and the health insurance system generally, with many praising the killing.

On December 9, Mangione was arrested at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, suspected by an employee of carrying out the attack. He was arraigned at Blair County Courthouse on firearms charges and questioned by the New York City Police Department.

Capture

On December 9th, Mangione was arraigned in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and was put into the Altoona county jail. When asked by the police if he has been to New York City recently, he was reportedly "visibly shaken". Mangione's attorney Thomas Dickey said that Mangione will not plead guilty to all the charges against him. Where he is currently being held for second degree murder. And will fight an extradition to New York. Mangione's lawyer also said that “Those two sciences in and of themselves have come under some criticism in the past, relative to their credibility, their truthfulness, their accuracy,” The New York governor Kathy Hochul said that she will sign a warrant for Mangione is "tried and held accountable" David Harris a law profressor also said that his extradition will delay things to about " 30 to 45 days, four to six weeks, in that range. But it will not stop the inevitable.” Mangione is currently being held in the State Correctional Institution which is the oldest prision in the state of Pennsylvania which has a population of 1,853 which is at 99% capacity. There was also a GiveSendGo which raised about 31,000 dollars (as of December 12) and the goal is 200,000 dollars. Thomas Dickey also said that Mangione is irritated.

Mangione is the relative of Maryland representative Nino Mangione, who has expressed devastation and no further knowledge of the case upon news of his arrest.

Motivations

Mangione was allegedly found to have a three-page manifesto that speaks to "both to his mind and his mindset" for the crime. Excerpts of the manifesto included, "These parasites had it coming" and "I do apologize for any strife or trauma, but it had to be done" Mangione called health care companies parasites, and he had a distain for cooperate greed and power. He also said that the United States had the most high-priced health care system in the world, and said that profits continued to rise while the life expectancy of Americans didn't. Mangione also left a four-star rating on the Unabomber manifesto, saying "Clearly written by a mathematics prodigy. Reads like a series of lemmas on the question of 21st century quality of life". Mangione has also had backpains since his childhood which probably contributed to his anger about the healthcare system.

Social media praise

People on social media immediately after Mangione's arrest began praising him as a hero and giving him flirtatious messages with one person saying “Sacrificing himself for the greater good of society.” People also began following his social media accounts garnering him 270,000 followers after his identification. Mangione's account on Twitter was deleted but shortly reinstated. An imposter on YouTube acting as him was deleted after garnering large viewers.
