- 1842 - Webster-Ashburton Treaty is signed, establishing the United States-Canada border east of the Rocky Mountains.
- 1862 - Battle of Cedar Mountain.
- 1877 - Battle of Big Hole - Nez Percé Indians clash with the U.S. Army.
- 1945 - An atomic bomb nicknamed "Fat Man" is detonated over the city of Nagasaki, Japan. An estimated 40,000 were killed, 60,000 injured.
