Maxim Dmitrievich Kinasov (Russian: Максим Дмитриевич Кинасов, Moscow) is a Russian musician and pianist. He is a winner of more than 20 international piano competitions, a soloist of the St. Petersburg Music House.[1], and an Ambassador for the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition & Festival[2].

Biography

Born in Moscow, he began studying piano at the age of five at the Yakov Flier Children's Music School under the tutelage of Nina Dolenko, an Honoured Cultural Worker of Russia.

In 2012, he graduated with First Class Honours from the Academic Music College of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he studied under Tatiana Direktorenko, an Honoured Cultural Worker of Russia.

He then completed his Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in the class of Professor Sergei Dorensky[3], a People's Artist of Russia. From 2014 to 2017, he was a Scholar of the Academic Council of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory.

In 2017, he moved to the United Kingdom to pursue a career as a concert pianist.

In 2019, he graduated with Distinction from the Master of Music in Performance programme at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK, under the guidance of Professor Ashley Wass, supported by the Leverhulme Trust Arts Scholarship. From 2020 to 2021, he studied under Professor Kathryn Stott in the Postgraduate Diploma programme at the Royal Northern College of Music. At the same institution, he completed the prestigious "International Artist Diploma" course for the most gifted students[4], which provided him the opportunity to make a debut recording of César Franck’s Symphonic Variations with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. This recording took place in November 2021 at the BBC Philharmonic Studio in Dock10, MediaCityUK, Salford.

Currently, he continues his professional development under Professors Graham Scott and Dina Parakhina.

Since 2012, he has been a soloist of the Saint Petersburg Music House[5] and has performed in some of the most prestigious venues in Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Israel, and the United States, including Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Auditorium Conciliazione in Rome, and the Great Hall of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory.

In 2019, after becoming an artist of London’s Kirckman Concert Society[6], Maxim gave his full-length solo debut at Wigmore Hall in October of that year[7].

In 2020, he performed at the Hastings International Piano Festival alongside renowned musicians such as Vanessa Latarche and Rufus Wainwright[8].

In May 2021, as a Scholar of the Imogen Cooper Music Trust, he participated in an intensive week-long residency of masterclasses with the world-famous pianist Imogen Cooper[9].

In October 2021, he was invited to perform at the Launch Concert of the 16th Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition at White Rock Theatre, where he played Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 with the European Union Chamber Orchestra[10]. After this performance, he was offered to serve as an Ambassador for the Hastings International Piano Competition & Festival during 2021–2023[11].

Maxim Kinasov’s musical prowess has led to collaborations with world-renowned orchestras, including the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (conductor Robin Wallington), the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (conductor Rory Macdonald), The Hallé (conductor Stephen Bell), the Royal Northern College of Music Symphony Orchestra (conductor Martyn Brabbins), the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (conductor Michael Seal), Saint Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra (conductor Alexander Titov), the Symphony Orchestra of Teatro Carlo Felice (conductor Andrea Sanguineti), the Philharmonic Orchestra Mihail Jora of Bacău, Romania (conductor Ovidiu Balan), the European Union Chamber Orchestra (conductor Darragh Morgan), and others.

By invitation from Nikolai Lugansky, Maxim participated in the 35th International Rachmaninov Music Festival in Tambov, Russia (2016)[12].

Among other festivals, he has performed at the King’s Lynn Festival[13], the Hastings International Piano Digital Festival[14], the South Downs Summer Music Festival in Alfriston[15], the Chester Music Festival[16], the Battle International Music Festival[17], the “Gradus ad Parnassum” Festival dedicated to Sviatoslav Richter (organised by Yamaha Music Russia)[18], and the Festival commemorating the 90th Anniversary of Sergei Dorensky at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory (2021)[19].

Maxim's performances have been broadcast on Italian TV channels Rai 2 and Telepace, as well as on BBC Radio 3.

Achievements

In 2013, Maxim won the Grand Prix, First Prize, and a Special Prize for the "Best Performance of a Work by Tchaikovsky" at the 9th Konstantin Igumnov International Competition for Young Pianists in Lipetsk, Russia[20].

He was awarded the Grand Prix and the Special Cuomo Foundation Prize for the "Best Pianist from Eastern Europe" at the 24th Chopin International Piano Competition in Rome (2014)[21]. Additionally, he won the Second Prize and the Audience Award at the 66th G. B. Viotti International Piano Competition in Vercelli, Italy (2015)[22].

As a chamber musician, Maxim became the winner of the 6th Sergei Taneyev International Chamber Music Competition in Kaluga, Russia, earning First Prize, the Special Tatiana Gaidamovich [ru] Award[23], and the Special Prize of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory for the "Best Performance of a Work by Taneyev" (2017)[24].

In 2018, Maxim won the most prestigious award of the Royal Northern College of Music – the Gold Medal[25], granting him the opportunity to perform at London’s Wigmore Hall in the spring of 2019[26].

In 2019, he secured First Prize and the Special Jury Mention at the 29th Cantù International Piano and Orchestra Competition in Italy[27], as well as the Second Prize and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Prize at the 15th Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition in the UK[28].

In April 2020, he was named Artist of the Month by the Talent Unlimited International Music Charity[29], and in May, he received the Ian Fleming Award at the annual Help Musicians Postgraduate Awards[30]
