Plot

Template:Spoiler-start Patchy has lost the 'SpongeBob SquarePants lost episode', and finds a map leading to it. He follows the instructions, until he reaches 'The seven trials of monkey lagoon'. This is actually a playground, but it appears to cause him great pain. He finds the tape and goes back home to see it. What he doesn't know what is that on the tape, there are two episodes, the real one and the fake one which isn't even an episode. The fake one is first which is a long clip of SpongeBob doing walk cycles to upbeat music. After Patchy sees it, he throws out all his SpongeBob merchandise and runs away feeling betrayed. When he finds out that the real episode is playing, he comes back home and puts his SpongeBob merchandise where it originally was, in a rewinding motion.

SpongeBob wishes he could fly with the jellyfish. He makes several flying machines, all of which fail to fly for long enough. In his attempts, he uses a biplane, bat wings, a garden chair with balloons, and a giant kite pulled by a bicycle. After attempting to fly, he is called "The Birdman of Bikini Bottom" and is ridiculed. Depressed, he finds out a way to fly - Inflatable pants. He is constantly asked to do favors, and when he finally refuses, he is left alone in jellyfish fields with his pants taken away. He is about to go home, unhappy that he is not able to fly after all, but suddenly, the jellyfish help him fly. In the end, Patrick says "Hey, SpongeBob, let's fly down to the pizza house for a slice." SpongeBob says "No flying for me, Patrick. I'll leave that to the jellyfish." Patrick then says "Suit yourself." and flies off. SpongeBob then says "Did Patrick just...? Nah!" and the episode ends.

After the episode, Patchy decides to play it again. Not knowing a thing about technology, he accidentally wrecks the tape so it can't be seen again.

Cultural References

  • The title is in some ways similar to The Boy Who Could Fly, specifically everything but the second word.
  • Spongebob's ideas for his flying machine allude many other flying machines, such as the plane at Kitty Hawk, the bat suit from Batman, and a lawnchair with balloons attached to it from Lawnchair Larry.
  • At the end of the song "He's Flying", when SpongeBob saves Plankton from the kelp by holding him up, it's similar to the way Rafiki holds up Simba in The Lion King.
  • The title card of this episode looks much like The Simpsons logo.

Trivia/Goofs

  • When Patchy leaves you see the TV says episode 118. This isn't episode 118. It can be counted as episode 118 if you count each Spongebob Episode Segment as an episode and put them all in production order. In the corrected production order it is episode 108.
  • Lou is shown in his younger version in this episode when he was older in Party Pooper Pants even though Party Pooper Pants was aired first
  • When this episode played before SpongeBob Lost in Time aired for the first time it was shortened and ended with SpongeBob landing in the feather truck.
  • The way that Patchy wrecked the tape is by hitting the rewind button with his hook hand, causing the VCR to malfunction.
  • Even though Patchy ruined the tape and said the episode is lost forever, Nickelodeon still shows it.
  • Patrick was shown with inflatable pants in the episode Patty Hype.
  • when Poty the parrot says "patchy, come back" the nickolodeon captions say "patrick, come back"
  • When the guy says "No, he owes us favors!" you'll notice he's wearing the exact same outfit as SpongeBob, but minus the red tie.
  • This is the first LIVE appearance of Grandpa SquarePants.
  • When the citizens rip off SpongeBob's destroyed pants to give a "proper burial," they rip off his shirt too. However, even without his shirt, SpongeBob still has his sleeves.

Notes

  • In the Hebrew version of this episode "Joe Mama" is called "סתם אחד" which means "just a guy". Or, in the English version, this could mean "Yo Mama"
  • In the Hebrew version of this episode the line "And I'll save Patrick from this mime" is translated "ואציל את פטריק מחנוך רוזן" which means "And I'll save Patrick from Hanoch Rozen". Hanoch Rozen is an Israeli mime.
  • The clown on TV in the Patchy the Pirate segment is writer Kent Osbourne.
  • In the storyboard for this episode, there is a deleted part when Don's Import Store and Delicatessen is simply called Shop N Shop and the owner says that no pirates are allowed.
  • Stock Footage from "Help Wanted", "Reef Blower", "Tea at the Treedome", "Bubblestand", "Ripped Pants", "Jellyfishing", "MuscleBob BuffPants", "The Chaperone", "Karate Choppers", "Valentine's Day", "The Paper", Naughty Nautical Neighbors", "Boating School", "Band Geeks", "Pizza Delivery" and "As Seen on TV" are used in the "Remembering SpongeBob" part. As Seen on TV is the only Season 3 episode shown in this 1-min. section.
  • Mrs. Puff's snail is similar to Squidward's snail, Snelly, when he entered her in a local race in The Great Snail Race. This could mean that Squidward gave Snelly to Mrs. Puff after he lost the race, however, Mrs. Puff clearly states in the song, "I've had that snail since I was a little girl..", which leaves what happened to Snelly unknown.
  • This is the third time we see Tom Kenny in the shower, the first and second times being Suds and Neptune's Spatula; however Tom Kenny is playing Patchy the Pirate during this particular instance, whereas the previous times his character isn't specified.
  • This is otherwise known as 'The Lost Episode'
  • When Mr. Krabs says "And the recycables?", SpongeBob says "Ah, shrimp.", but the captions say "Now that you mention it."
  • Before the commercial break during the televised version, the narrator says "Will SpongeBob be able to fly? Stay tuned.", but on the Lost at Sea DVD, it just fades out and goes to the next part.
