This article documents a current event. Information may change rapidly as the event progresses, and initial news reports may be unreliable. The latest updates to this article may not reflect the most current information. |
HD DVD Night[1] was an event occurring over approximately two days from April 29 - May 1 2007 around the web, but particularly on Digg.[1] The event was characterised by widespread civil disobedience; manifested as the posting of an HD DVD processing key to various websites in protest initially of DMCA takedown notices to sites such as Google and Boing Boing, but later protesting against perceived censorship by Digg admins who were removing key related stories and banning their submitters without warning.[2][3]
The flooding of Digg with HD-DVD key stories ended soon after Kevin Rose posted an entry on the Digg blog stating that stories or comments on Digg containing the key would no longer be deleted[4][5]. Rose also posted a story on Digg linking to the blog post[6].
News coverage
The story quickly spread into mainstream coverage.[7] Unusually, the New York Times's blog "The Lede" heavily linked to entries containing the key.[8]
