Thomas
Gender: Male
Origin: Aramaic
Meaning: "Twin"

Thomas was not a Biblical given name, but originated from the Aramaic designation תום or Tôm. The meaning of the name is "twin", and in the New Testament the designation was applied to Thomas the Apostle. The name "Thomas" was not very popular until the 12th century, after the martyrdom of Thomas Becket. It was also unpopular in Celtic nations because in Celtic languages the word tom means "tomb" and Tomais means "from the tomb", or some variant of it.

The female versions of this name are Thomasina and Tamsin.
