The Folks Nation is an alliance of street gangs based out of the Chicago area which has since branched throughout the United States. They are theoretically rivals to the People Nation. Within the Folks Nation alliance there are many gangs which all have their own unique colors, handsigns, and organization. Many of these gangs have signed a charter to join the Folks alliance. It was formed on November 11, 1978 in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Soon afterwards the People Nation was formed to counter the Folks alliance. Larry Hoover the chairman of the GDN created the idea for the alliance and persuaded many leaders of large Black, White, and Latino gangs from Chicago to join. After having a prosperous beginging in the late '70s and through out the '80s the alliance started to break apart in the early '90s due to wars over money and drugs between fellow Folks gangs. This alliance now carries very little weight on the streets as there are many interalliance wars between Folks gangs.

Symbols used by Folk Nation

[[Symbolism|Symbols]Shared symbols used by Folks Nation gangs include a six pointed star (a Star of David),adopted in honor of the deceased leader of the Black Gangster Disciple Nation in the 1960's and early 1970's 'King' David Barksdale who died on September 2, 1974 of kidney failure as a result of receiving bullet wounds from an encounter with a rival gang five and a half years previously. The Six-Pointed star is no longer used by a large amount of Folks gangs due to it representing their unity which mostly no longer exist. Pitchforks were once used by many Folks gangs but now only by Disciple gangs i.e. GD,SGD,IGSD,MLD, and YLOD only use it as the majority of Folks now throw it down to disrespect them.

Members of Folks Nation gangs wear clothing to the right. This is in contrast to People Nation gangs, which wear similar clothing on the left side of their body. Folks Nation gangs use the term "All As One" to signify their unity much like People Nation gangs say the term "All Is Well".

Folks Nation Infiltrates US Military?

In March of 2005, KFOX TV of El Paso, Texas (a hub of Folks Nation activity) reported that Folk Nation members were actively being encouraged to join the U.S. Military. The report quoted Jeremy Francis, an FBI special agent, as saying that the gang "will hand pick them, ask them to keep their record clear so that they can enlist in the military, and once they're in the military, they want them to try and gain access to weapons and explosives and basically try to filter that back to the street level."
