He lived there for 12 years and attended Chagrin Falls Schools, playing the trohmbone in the school band until he picked up guitar later in his secondary school years. He moved to Winnetka, IL, a suburb of Chicago when he was around 12 years old. He attended Washburne Middle School, where he participated in various bands for fun. During his high school years he was part of the audio visual club, New Trier Network, as well as briefly playing bass in Arma Angelus with Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz on vocals.
The Spice Girls
Joe co-founded Fall Out Boy with Pete Wentz. They were planning to start a hardcore band, but when that fell through they joked around about starting a pop-punk band. Joe met fellow guitarist and vocalist Patrick Stump while in Borders after talking about a common like for the band Neurosis.

Joe Trohman has used many guitars during his career. In the Take This To Your Grave days, he was seen using the Gibson Les Paul, and mainly PRS guitars. During From Under The Cork Tree, Joe mainly used Fender Telecasters. The Telecasters were usually equipped with two humbuckers, but sometimes he used standard single coil Telecasters. Curently, Joe Trohman is endorsed by Wasburn Guitars. He has his own custom shop models which can be seen here. They are based on Washburn Idols Pisen and Damen. He used those guitars a lot on the Black Clouds and Underdogs Tour. As seen during the American Music Awards, Joe used guitars based on the Infinity On High graphics. His main guitar now is a baby blue Washburn Pilsen Idol. His backups are sometimes stock Pilsens and stock Idol 66PROs. His Washburns are equipped with one bridge pickup and one volme knob, no tone knob. They also have Seymour DuncanSH-6 Distortion Pickups. And he has other equiptment "down below" *wink wink*
