New Alliance (Template:Lang-da) is a Danish political party, founded on 7 May 2007. Its founding members are Naser Khader (MP), Anders Samuelsen (MEP) — both former members of the Danish Social Liberal Party (Template:Lang-da) — and Gitte Seeberg (MEP), a former member of the Conservatives. It considers itself a centre party, based on social liberalism and elements of conservatism.[1] It is the country's first new major party in the past decade.[2]
Policies
The New Alliance opposes the influence of the right-wing Danish People's Party on government, as well as the strategy of Det Radikale Venstre.
The party's main goals are a tax reform reducing income tax to a fixed rate of 40%, a "realistic immigration policy and humane refugee policy with emphasis on democratic integration", a pro-European Union policy while strengthening Denmark's position, an increase in foreign aid to 1 % of GDP, and reforms of state schools and the national health service. It supports green energy.[3][2]
Critics have accused the party of being populist or personalist, still lacking stances on many topics and based on the huge popularity of Naser Khader. [4] The party expects to introduce a detailed programme by August 2007. The three founders have announced that they will tour Denmark this summer campaigning for the party.
European Parliament
With the defection of MEPs Gitte Seeberg and Anders Samuelsen, the Conservatives and Det Radikale Venstre are effectively left without representatives in the European Parliament. The two MEPs will, however, stay in their fractions (the Conservative EPP-ED and the Liberal ALDE respectively). The New Alliance has announced it will join the ALDE group after future EU elections.[5]
Recent development
New Alliance have had a surge of new members. 24 hours after announcing the party, more than 12,000 had registered on the party website. Three days later 16,000 had registered and 8,000 of these had paid the membership fee.[6] For comparison the parent party Det Radikale Venstre had an estimated 9,500 paying members as of 2006.
On 8 May a poll said that 2 % of voters would "definitely" vote for the New Alliance while a further 9 % would "probably" vote for them. Most supporters were reported to come from other right-of-centre parties, as well as Det Radikale Venstre. [7] This would allow the party to surpass the election threshold of 2 % with high probability. Two polls published on 10 May said the New Alliance would get about 11 % or 16 % respectively, turning the new party into the third strongest fraction of the Folketing and making the governing coalition depend on it.[8]
Leif Mikkelsen became the party's second MP switching from Venstre on 10 May 2007. Among his reasons, he mentioned his former party's reluctance to discuss tax cuts.[9]
Since two MPs of the coalition-supporting Danish People's Party left their fraction during the last weeks, for other reasons, prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen's cabinet is now left with a parliamentary majority only two votes strong. There have been speculations whether the situation would trigger a quick election. To stand for elections, however, the New Alliance must collect 20,000 signatures of supporters, a task still outstanding.
