Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals is an upcoming expansion for Zoo Tycoon 2 due to be released sometime around 2007. This expansion pack follows the other expansion packs, Endangered Species, African Adventure and Marine Mania. Extinct Animals also follows the similar Dino Danger Pack premium download.

Leaking

In 2006, in a similar way to how the African Adventure expansion was first confirmed, Amazon.com listed a strategy guide for Extinct Animals under its listings. Curiously, it was listed as 'Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct (working title)', showing Blue Fang Games were still in very early production.

However, in January 2007, Windows Vista released its 2007 gaming lineup as well as a promotional video featuring a few seconds of footage. During April Games for Windows added an Extinct Animals page to their website and showed several new pieces of information such as box art and animal confirmations. Wal-Mart had also listed a Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals Prima Official Game Guide for $14.44, that will be available 04/30/2007 .

Wal-Mart did not release the game on 4/30/07, nor has any information about the game been added to the official Zoo Tycoon website. A Swiss gaming website has Extinct Animals listed for release on 05/07/2007. However, the expansion was still not released.

It has been stated by some that the date was written DD/MM/2007, meaning July 5 2007 although it was announced that it will come out in fall.

Confirmation

On May 24, 2007 it was announced by Microsoft Game Studios and Blue Fang Games LLC that “Zoo Tycoon® 2: Extinct Animals,” the biggest expansion pack to date for the award-winning “Zoo Tycoon 2” franchise, will be available on Windows®-based PCs this fall.— Players can get up close and personal with Earth’s most fascinating former inhabitants as

Introducing 30 new animals and more than a dozen dinosaurs, ranging from the adorable dodo bird and massive American mastodon to the saber-toothed cat and T. rex, “Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals” provides new ways for players to experience the award-winning gameplay of “Zoo Tycoon 2.” Aspiring zoologists will be challenged to dig for fossils, bring animals that once roamed the earth thousands of years ago to life in the Extinct Research Lab, and wrangle rampaging dinosaurs with a tranquilizer gun.

Animals

The following animals have either been confirmed, or have been seen in the Promotional Video or Box art:

• Woolly rhinoceros - a relatively clear image of two brown rhinoceroses can be seen briefly in the video.
• Smilodon - a smilodon like creature can be seen, the long canines can just be made out. Also appeared on the box art and in one of the screenshots and was mentioned in the confirmation.
• Dodo - appeared on the box art.
• American Mastodon - was mentioned in confirmation.
• A Bear, possibly a Cave Bear or a Short-Faced Bear(as its biome is tundra) can be seen in one of the screenshots

It also seems likely that this Expansion Pack will include the animals from Dino Danger as they have been included in one of the Screenshots and T-Rex was mentioned in the confirmation.

Items/Objects

The Windows Vista gaming commercial showed the following items briefly:

• Entertainer - there appeared to be a person dressed as either a tiger, a Smilodon, Santa Claus or a red panda doing a back flip and a guest laughing, most likely a new staff member to satisfy the guest's amusment level.
• Mammoth skeleton/statue - On one fansite, someone took a screenshot of the few seconds that show a mammoth like object. In the screenshot it is clear that it is a skeleton, rather than a statue.

Trivia

• The Extinct Animals expansion pack follows the Dino Danger Pack premium pack.
• The Games for Windows page contains the Extinct Animals boxart, but the information is the same as Zoo Tycoon 2: Endangered Species.
