The Palestinian Army of Islam (Arabic: جَيش الإسلام Jaīsh al-'Islām) is a Palestinian militant group.
In June, 2006 Israeli Defense Forces member Gilad Shalit was captured during an attack on an Israeli military outpost by a number of Palestinian militants. It was reported in the media that the attack was carried out by a coalition of different groups, one of which included the previously unknown group calling itself the Army of Islam. Abu Muthana is a spokesman for this group.
The group has split from Hamas, and it is influenced ideologically by Al-Qaeda.
The group is also allegedly responsible for the kidnapping of BBC reporter Alan Johnston.[1] A video showing Alan was published on the internet by the group on 1 June 2007.[2]
