The Athlon 64 FX is an AMD K8 series processor targeted at enthusiasts. For this reason, the processor is left fully multiplier unlocked (both upwards and downwards), enabling the user to change the operating frequency from the default value more easily. It is intended for users of single-processor personal computer systems. The processor implements the x86 and AMD64 instruction sets. It features 1024 KB (1MB) of Level 2 cache, and a dual channel 128-bit memory controller. It is supplied at frequencies from 2.2 GHz to 2.8 GHz. Like the other processors of the K8 series, it features a HyperTransport bus (800 MHz, later 1000 MHz). The FX also comes in two flavors: the 940 pin (a server platform) form, and later in the 939 pin (desktop enthusiast board) form. The Athlon 64 FX comes in three models so far: the FX-51 (2.2GHz), FX-53 (2.4GHz) and FX-55 (2.6GHz). A new model known as FX-57 which will operate at 2.8 GHz is supposed to be released in Q2 2005.
