WZDX is the FOX-affiliated television station for the Huntsville - Decatur - Florence, Alabama television market. Licensed to Huntsville, the station broadcasts an analog signal on UHF channel 54 and a digital signal on UHF channel 41. WZDX's transmitter, which is shared with the area's ABC affiliate WAAY, is located east of Huntsville on Monte Sano. The station is known on-air as "FOX 54".
WZDX operates the area's digital transmission MyNetworkTV affiliate "WAMY-TV". For over-the-air viewers, WAMY is also offered on channel 8 & WZDX digital subchannel 2. Both stations are owned by Grant Broadcasting System II and share studios located on North Memorial Parkway (a.k.a. US 231, US 431, SR 1, and SR 2) near Alabama A&M University.
Along with FOX primetime, FOX Sports, and overnight paid programming, WZDX's syndicated lineup includes: Still Standing, Montel, Maury, The Tyra Banks Show, a weekday court block from 11 AM until 5 PM, Everybody Loves Raymond, Seinfeld, and Malcolm in the Middle.
WZDX offers a website, known as "Beyond The TV", which contains local advertising and station promotions.
History
WZDX began broadcasting on April 20, 1985. Its first program was a broadcast of the 1968 film Charly. At that time, the station's transmitter was located on Green Mountain in Southeast Huntsville while its studios were located in Northwest Huntsville. During the first months after going on-air, WZDX used the slogan "We're Taking You to the Top!". In the beginning, WZDX was Northern Alabama's first independent station and the first new station in nearly 20 years. When the new FOX network began broadcasting in 1987, WZDX abstained from affliating, unlike many independents. However, the station did air occasional FOX broadcasts such as the Emmy Awards. Eventually, in 1990, WZDX became a full-fledged affiliate of FOX.
In 2002, WZDX launched the second digital signal of the market on UHF channel 41. "WAWB-TV" (now "WAMY-TV"), the area's cable-only WB affiliate, began to be offered on a second digital subchannel of WZDX-DT. This move was made in order to offer non-cable viewers access to WB programming.
WZDX is one of a handful of FOX affiliates to not feature a local newscast. Its only attempt at local news occurred during the station's early months in 1985, when brief, five-minute updates aired during primetime.
Notes
The Huntsville - Decatur television market is only one of two in the Southeastern U.S. to have only UHF channel allocations, the other being Lexington, Kentucky. No full-power VHF stations exist at all in the state of Alabama north of Birmingham. Thus, none of the Northern Alabama-based channels have ever suffered a disadvantage from competing against established VHF stations in the same area, a problem that particularly affected UHF broadcasters elsewhere, well into the early 1980s.
