Air Memphis is a charter airline based in Cairo, Egypt. Its main base is Cairo International Airport, with a hub at Daraw Airport, Aswan[1].
History
The airline was established in August 1995 and started operations in March 1996. It has 530 employees (at March 2007)[1].
Incidents and accidents
- One of its Boeing 707's was written off on 2 April 2004, after an accident taking off from runway 23L at Cairo airport. The aircraft lost directional control, ran off the right hand side of the runway, leading to the right hand landing gear collapsing, resulting in damage to engines 3 and 4. There were no injuries or fatalities[2].
- On 31 May 2006, Air Memphis' DC-9 experienced some form of engine failure shortly after takeoff from Baghdad International Airport around 8 PM local time. After apparently dumping fuel, the DC-9 returned to the airport for an emergency landing. There were no injuries or fatalities. More than 24 hours later, one of Air Memphis' Airbus jets arrived to transport the approximately 100 passengers to their destination of Cairo. The DC-9 sat inoperable on the tarmac of Baghdad International Airport for more than one week after the incident, but does now appear to be repaired and back in service [1].
