Broken: The Memory of Solaris, is a campaign setting for the d20 roleplaying system. It tells the story of the world of Solaris, which came to it's untimely end. Survivors were thrust into the cold void of space with few resources, little hope and only magic and luck to keep them alive. It is 40 years later. The original survivors are well established, or at least adjusted to their lot in life, floating in space on a chunk of rock many miles from the next nearest rock. A second generation of survivors are growing up in the void with no memory of their lost world, seeking to make things better in a void they have always called home.
Broken explores the very real problems of weightlessness, radiation, cold, heat, how many plants are required to produce enough oxygen, carbon dioxide poisoning, and so on, that are encountered in space. Solutions are acheived with both mundane and magical means to keep the survivors, perhaps not fluorishing, but alive.
This book is full color with sprawling spacescape backgrounds. A parchment, floating in space, starts on the first page and ends near the last and contains the text of the book. The book was originally created in a layout format (wide) because it fits very well on screen in it's intended PDF format. For publication however, no such landscape format was availible and the artwork was taken back to photoshop for editing into a portrait (tall) format. Most of the art was left unaltered but the backgrounds and certain full-page pictures had to be modified to suit the new format so that a print could be made.
Broken was written in 2002 by Mark Charke as a 10 page writing sample. A publisher asked Charke to develop it into a book, but went out of business before publishing it. The now 100 page Broken was playtested and edited off and on for several years, until it was accepted by The Le Games in fall 2006 who asked about art for the text. Creating more than 50 peices of art and doing the layout, Charke finished the book in mid 2007.
Expansions for Broken are in progress and include Broken: The Lost Moon, the story of the moon of Solaris shrouded in sandstorms and populated by lycanthrope tribes, druids and undead and Broken: The Pipedream, home of the glomes where one young glome's plan may give new hope to the dream. Art, writing and layout will once again be performed by Mark Charke.

Medical Missionaries Dr. Gilbert Irwin
Dr. Dooley's organization inspired the efforts of Dr. Gilbert Irwin of Woodbridge, Virginia, USA. In 1997, he created the Medical Missionaries group. According to the Old Bridge Observer, June 30, 2007, "Irwin explained the goal of Medical Missionaries is to train and educate people in Third World countries on health maintenance, proper sanitation and preventative medicine. The group also sends containers of basic resources to clinics and hospitals, in support of a variety of nonprofit medical teams. Ten years after the 1997 startup, Medical Missionaries can call on 150 volunteers who believe in its mission and help collect, inventory and send medical supplies, equipment and medicines to 33 countries. It lists impressive numbers of helpful interventions: support of more than 100 medical teams, educational seminars to train these teams and local volunteers, 500 major surgeries performed in poor villages, 500,000 doses of vaccines sent overseas, dental care for 10,000 people, eye care and glasses for 2,000 people." Dr. Irwin says "In high school, I raised money for Dr. Dooley's medical work. For years I sent donated medicines around the world. But in 1997, when a former patient sent me a letter graphically describing the health needs of a mountainous area in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, I knew I had to do something more."
The Observer reports: Donations of personal dental supplies, nonprescription medicines and vitamins are always needed. Medical supplies and equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, bandages and dressings are also in high demand. Special arrangements can always be made for local pickup, and volunteers are needed to help with small, individual pickups. Irwin welcomes anyone with a pickup or van who could help pickup or load containers. Others are invited to help sort and inventory at the Bristow, VA, warehouse. Call Irwin at 703-361-5116 or email Irwinmed@aol.com if you would like more information or have items to donate.
Prince William Fencing Academy

The Prince William Fencing Academy is a state of the art school located in Manassas, Virginia, USA. The PWFA opened in April 2007, with a Grand Opening Open Tournament cheerfully nicknamed The GOO for short. It is a huge facility, with many fencing strips, decorated in a wonderful mix between intensely competitive sport and playful art. Alongside the massive mirrored walls stand a small army of familiar faces, ranging from cartoon images of Captain Jack Sparrow, Japanese anime heroes, and Puss 'n Boots. They each "wear" a target on their chests to be used for target practice by the fencers to make lessons even more fun! These characters were painted by two members of the Green Ronin Fencing Club, which has made the PWFA their home.
Coach Greg and Coach Daniel have extensive fencing and coaching backgrounds. Coach Greg has been fencing since age 7, in the former Soviet Union, and is a larger-than-life figure at the Academy. Coach Daniel, originally from Connecticut, recently took several of his Green Ronin students to the Junior Olympics in Denver, where they proved that Green Ronin was the team to watch.
