Malvern Link is an area of Malvern, Worcestershire, England to the north and north-east of Great Malvern. The centres of Malvern Link and Great Malvern are separated by Malvern Link Common, an area of open land that is statutorily protected by the Malvern Hills Conservators organization.
Malvern Link is home to the famous Morgan Motor Company. One of Malvern's two secondary schools, Dyson Perrins High School, is located in Malvern Link. Dyson Perrins is named after the family made famous by the local product Worcestershire sauce. Malvern Link is served by Malvern Link railway station on the Worcester to Hereford line.
It is thought that "Malvern Link" got its name because the Victorians used to link up more horses to the carriages so that they could be pulled up the hill on the A449 which runs through the centre of Malvern Link to the small urban centre of Link Top at its western end before arriving in the town centre of Great Malvern. At the point where it passes through Malvern Link it is also called Worcester Road, as it leads directly into the centre of the city of Worcester about eight miles to the east.[citation needed]
However, "Malvern Link" may also refer to the slope of the Malvern Hills on which it is situated, from the Middle English "hlinc" meaning a ridge of land, or a hill. (compare with "helling" meaning "slope" in Dutch, and in German the more specialised "slipway"[1])
Worcester Road hosts Malvern Link's primary shopping area with many shops including a grocery store called "Peas and Cues", a Co-op supermarket, a Domino's Pizza and several takeaway restaurants including Indian, Chinese, and traditional English fish and chip shops.
Malvern Link is home to many employees of nearby defence company, QinetiQ, the Malvern site being a brisk 45-minute walk away.[citation needed] In particular, students participating in the Year in Industry scheme who have been placed at QinetiQ have been known to rent out flats above the storefront on Worcester Road due to the convenient location.[citation needed]
Malvern Link has a GP's surgery and is served by Malvern Hills District Council. It is also the location for the Malvern Linux Users Group. This meets regularly and has headquarters in the office of a local web-design company.[2])
There is a bright mural at the crossroads in Malvern Link, depicting, amongst other things, the Hills, Edward Elgar and The Link Stone, which stands outside St Matthias Church.
