The Reading Fringe Festival was started in 2005 in Reading, Berkshire, after a group of several musicians, producers and promoters decided to showcase Reading's musical talent in the week running up to the Carling Weekend. The concept was to bring the local promoters and venues together for one week of gigs promoted by the fringe committee. 2005 was seen as a success both in the local and national press.
The 2006 Reading Fringe Festival was less successful and saw some of the major events attended by only a handful of people. This was blamed on incompetent web promotions, lateness of promotional material and misuse of the fringe festival myspace page, not to mention the problems of trying to compete for press attention with a major rock festival in the same week.
