The "Golden Chain" or a list of wealthy Saudi sponsors represents a list of financiers of al Qaeda. The list was seized in March of 2002 when the Bosnian police searched the offices of Benevolence International Foundation in Sarajevo. The list includes at least 20 top Saudi financial sponsor including bankers, businessmen, and former ministers. Part of the list included computer file titles "Tareekh Osama" or "Osama History." It was presented by the United States Government case USA v. Arnaout filed on January 29, 2003.

Implications

Osama Bin Laden knew that to establish a worldwide organization devoted entirely to the continual and eventual success of jihad in Afghanistan he needed a sound financial plan. This financial network eventual became known as the "Golden Chain." It was put together mainly from financiers from Saudia Arabia and other Persian Gulf states. The money came from charities and donations and even from non-governmental agencies. Bin Laden relied heavily on this network and used the funds to purchase arms and supplies for terrorist camps. Establishing the "Golden Chain" gave Bin Laden a strong financial backing with which he could (finish reading 9/11 Commission Report and footnote this area)
