George Newhouse was elected in 1995 as a Councillor representing Hunter Ward at Waverley Council.
George Newhouse was elected in 1995 as a Labor Councillor representing Hunter Ward, which covers North Bondi, Rose Bay, Dover Heights and parts of Vaucluse, at Waverley Council. Since his election, he has been active in the different local government committees, participating in the Finance, Ethics and Community Services Committees and chairing the Development Control Committee. Furthermore, he was a founding member of the Waverley-Wollahra Bondi Junction Joint Planning Committee, and chaired the Waverley Council Bondi Junction Committee during a period of major upgrade including the $600 million Westfield redevelopment and teh upgrade of Oxford Street

He was elected Deputy Mayor of Waverley in 2004 and was elevated to the Municipality's Mayoralty in [[September 2006]]. In his capacity as Mayor, George Newhouse has undertaken what he terms "back-to-basics" reforms, by moving Waverley Council's Service Center & Planning Counter to Bondi Junction, creating a Mayor mobile to keep in touch with local residents, and emphasising the need to combat [[climate change]] at a local level, by committing to make Waverley Council carbon-neutral within 5 years and supporting other enviromentally-friendly initiatives.

After several months of speculation, George Newhouse announced that he would seek preselection for the federal electorate of Wentworth, and was officially endorsed in May 2007. He will be facing the incumbent multi-millionaire Liberal parlementarian [[Malcolm Turnbull]].

Cr George Newhouse (born 14 August 1961, Brisbane) (B.Com. Ll.B) is an Australian human rights lawyer, famous for representing Vivian Solon, an Australian woman illegally deported to the Philippines and Cornelia Rau, detained for 10 months in an Australian detention centre. Since September 2006, he has also been the Mayor of Waverley. He was elected as a Councillor for the Hunter Ward in 1995.

Youth and Education

George Newhouse was born in Brisbane on 14 August 1961. A few years later he and his family moved to the Eastern Suburbs.

From 1967 to 1979, he attended Sydney Grammar School, getting his School Certificate in 1977 and his HSC two years later. He later studied both Law and Commerce at the University of NSW, obtaining a Bachelor of Commerce, specialising in Accounting and Finance in 1983, and a Bachelor of Laws one year later.

He currently resides with his family in the Eastern Suburbs.

Immediately after completing his university degrees, he was hired by JP Morgan Australia Ltd. as a corporate finance account officer in Sydney. In 1987, he was transfered to New York City where he was a Treasury Planning and Development Manager.

From 1988 onwards, George Newhouse became increasingly involed in practising law, being a Senior Partner at Clifford Chance Solicitors in 1988 and 1989 as well as being an accredited mediator on various NSW State Government judicial bodies and organisations such as the Consumer Trader Tenancy Tribunal since 1999, the Local Court of NSW and the Workers Compensation Commission since 2001.
