Look up hello in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.
"Hello" is a salutation or greeting – see spoken greeting. It is also the name of several things. It is also said as "Hi" and translates to Hola (in Spanish), Bonjour (in French), Konnichiwa (in Japanese), Merhaba (in Turkish), Ni Hao (in Mandarin) and many others.
Speakers of many languages use "hello" or something very similar-sounding when speaking on the telephone, regardless of the normal greeting in that language. Examples would be Russian "алло" and Thai "haloo."
Things commonly known as Hello include:
- Hello! — a British celebrity magazine.
- Hello by Picasa — a program that allows users to share pictures across the internet or to post them on blogs.
- Hello — a remix single by The Beloved, also on their album Conscience
- Hello — a song that is the first track on the album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? by britpop band Oasis.
- Hello — a song that is the first track on the album Electric Light Orchestra Part II by Electric Light Orchestra II.
- Hello — an airline in Switzerland
