The Corporation Counsel is the title given to the city attorney in some jurisdictions, who handles civil claims against the city, including negotiating settlements and defending the city when it is sued. A corporation counsel never prosecutes criminal cases. In smaller cities, the city attorney handles both jobs.
The Cities of New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., among others use this title.
