Over one millions athletes and thousands of kickboxing clubs around the globe fall under the governance of WAKO. In addition to amateur competitions, WAKO sanctions professional kickboxing events in various countries. The annual WAKO World Championships and European Championships are the only amateur kickboxing events to receive international media coverage. History
WAKO was founded in 1976 as the worls's first ever international kickboxing organization by George Bruckner. The first WAKO championship was billed as full-contact karate and was held in 1978 with 110 fighters from 18 countries, including Chuck Norris and Aaron Banks.
