Luxray (レントラー, Rentorā, Rentoraa in original Japanese language versions) are one of the Template:Pokenum fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards, and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Luxray is famous for being one of the Pokémon revealed before the Japanese release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The purpose of Luxray in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]
The name Luxray is a portmanteau of lux, the SI unit of illuminance, or possibly Luxor, and x-ray. 'Lux' is also the Latin word for 'light'. The Japanese name Rentorer is a portmanteau of the Japanese transliteration of the name of Röntgen (レントゲン, Rentogen), a German physicist that discovered x-rays, and the Japanese word for tiger (虎, tora).
Biological characteristics
Luxray resembles a fully-grown lion. It has long black fur on most of its body, while other parts of Luxray are light blue, creating a unique appearance, making it appear quite dark. Luxray has two oval ears beside its head and a long tail with a four-pointed yellow star at the tip. It also has three rings around the backs of its legs (the front are black), while Luxio has two and Shinx has one.
Luxray's gold, red-pupiled eyes are specially designed for X-ray vision, which enables this predatory Pokémon to spot hiding prey, even if hidden behind a wall.
The manes of female Luxray are about a third the length of their male counterparts.
In the video games
Luxray first appears in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, and is the final stage of the Shinx evolutionary line. It evolves from Luxio at level 30, which evolves from Shinx at level 15. Luxray may also be the perfect pokemon to get the dark type as a secondary type in future games, seeing as there is no elctric and dark typed pokemon.
Luxray have high Attack, HP, and Special Attack; however, its slow for an Electric type and has average Defenses.
Volkner is the only Sinnoh Gym Leader to have a Luxray. He is also the last gym leader you will challenge before taking on the Elite Four.
