Personality and Appearance
Eustace is a cruel, selfish, greedy, anti-social, bad-tempered farmer. Eustace dislikes Courage, whom he refers to as a "stupid dog". Eustace is given a generally negative characterization. He will do just about anything for money and he often refuses to spend the money he does have, even if it means having bad health. He spends a lot of time sitting in his red recliner, which he is unwilling to give up to anyone, watching his dated television. His relationship with his elderly mother (Ma Bagge) is strained. One noticeable exception to his classification as "negative" is that he is shown to care about Muriel, at least a bit, when she isn't feeling well (e.g. helping her walk to a chair to sit down, exclaiming her name when she is attacked in a weakened state). Eustace is bald and wears a maroon hat to cover his head. He is rather insecure about his baldness.
Childhood
As revealed in the episodes Shirley the Medium, Curse of Shirley, and Farmer-Hunter, Farmer-Hunted, Eustace had a rough childhood. His brother, Hoarse, and his own mother seemed to be very cruel to him. In addition, he was bald when he was little and didn't have a hat to cover it up then. That may very well be the reason he is cruel as an old man.
Quotes
- (After the introduction) Stupid dog! You made me look bad!
- Stupid Dog!
- What did I do?
- What, eh?
- Garbage!
- Now look what you made me do!
Trivia
- Eustace suffers a great many mishaps; an episode typically ends with him in some predicament, such as being blasted to the moon, eaten, zapped, mummified, transformed, possessed, or even killed, but he always returns fine the next episode. Eustace's mishaps sometimes result from bad luck, but they're often consequences of his bad behavior.
- He often pulls cruel jokes on Courage. A recurring gag in the series involves Eustace putting on a Swahili-like mask and yelling "Ooga Booga Booga!" to frighten Courage.
- His name may be a play on the phrase "Useless Bag".
- Despite being a farmer, Eustace never actually bother to grow anything. In the episode House of Discontent, he claims that the land is bad and suggests that he has failed numerous times in trying to grow anything. However, Muriel has been shown to grow many things before, so it is likely the problem is due to Eustace rather than the land.
